\u201cMannerism,\u201d a poem by Rene Ricard from our Summer 1970 issue<\/a>. Ricard was born on this day in 1946; he died last year. An obituary in<\/em>\u00a0the<\/em> New York Times calls him \u201ca notorious aesthete<\/a> who roamed Manhattan\u2019s contemporary art scene with a capacious, autodidactic erudition and a Wildean flamboyance.\u201d In the eighties, his essay \u201cThe Radiant Child\u201d helped to burnish the reputation of Jean-Michel Basquiat. <\/em><\/p>\n

These are the problems which inhabit the imagination
\nTincture of opium, redolent eucalyptus balm
\nThe constituent order fails
\nAt any attempted rescue, the end of a soft brown epoch<\/p>\n

Some things were marvelous: Bring on the Byzantine
\nThe gilded orient spoiling Venice\u2019s moldy sewer
\n\u201cWhy must they build their capitals on swamps?\u201d
\nParis! London! Moscow!<\/p>\n

We find remaining fragments bizarre
\nIt\u2019s the mulch of the Cul de Sac
\nTempting our languor with that dead clutter sensation
\n\u201cI\u2019m like a fallow field.\u201d
