First, Shirley Jackson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shirley-Jackson-Stories-Lottery-Haunting\/dp\/1598530720\/\">deliciously creepy tales<\/a> (\u201cThe Lottery\u201d has nothing on \u201cThe Summer People,\u201d by the way), then Joyce Carol Oates\u2019s<em> New Yorker<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2010\/12\/13\/101213fa_fact_oates\">article<\/a> on her husband\u2019s sudden death and the advent of unexpected widowhood, and finally, a smattering of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Selected-Tsvetaeva-Marina-Twentieth-Century-Classics\/dp\/0140187596\/\">Marina Tsvetaeva<\/a>\u2019s vulnerable, heartfelt poems. Next week: Maybe I\u2019ll lighten things up with a little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Don-Marquis\/e\/B000AQ7566\/\">Don Marquis<\/a>\u2014<em>toujours gai<\/em>! \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A copy of <em>The New Yorker<\/em>\u2019s newly minted <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/20-Under-40-Stories-Yorker\/dp\/0374532877\/\">20 Under 40<\/a><\/em> book, edited by Deborah Treisman, landed on my desk. The colors on the spine are festively appropriate for the holidays (just like our fresh-off-the-press <a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/products\/the-paris-review-no-195-winter-2010\">winter issue<\/a>). Some of my favorites (and there are many): Daniel Alarc\u00f3n\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/features\/2010\/08\/16\/100816fi_fiction_alarcon\">Second Lives<\/a>,\u201d (check out what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/12\/06\/mario-vargas-llosa-a-portrait-in-miniature\/\">he wrote for us<\/a> this week); Salvatore Scibona\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/features\/2010\/06\/14\/100614fi_fiction_scibona\">The Kid<\/a>\u201d; and C. E. Morgan\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/features\/2010\/06\/14\/100614fi_fiction_morgan\">Twins<\/a>.\u201d \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jed Perl\u2019s pox-on-both-your-houses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/article\/the-picture\/79720\/david-wojnarowicz-fire-in-my-belly\">treatment<\/a> of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/09\/critics-notebook-david-wojnarowiczs-a-fire-in-my-belly\/?src=mv\">l&#8217;affair Wojnarowicz<\/a><\/em> and its \u201cWikileaks crudity.\u201d \u2014<strong>David Wallace-Wells<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Like many avid David Foster Wallace fans, I was both thrilled for the recent release of his archives at the Harry Ransom Center and a little sad that I lived so far from Austin. Luckily, I was able to get a glimpse of what it&#8217;s like to sift through the documents by reading Seth Colter Wall\u2019s article in <em>Newsweek<\/em>. The piece is accompanied by a gallery of what didn\u2019t make it into <em>Infinite Jest<\/em>, which pushed my DFW-induced excitement over the edge\u2014more to read of my favorite book of all time! I love <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2010\/11\/19\/what-didn-t-make-it-into-infinite-jest\/b-s-1960-a-first-person-narrative.html \">this beautifully intimate scene<\/a> in the Arizona desert, which is part of a first-person narrative from James O. Incadenza that was cut from the final version. \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inspired by Jay-Z\u2019s new book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Decoded-Jay-Z\/dp\/1400068924\">Decoded<\/a><\/em>, I decided to find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azlyrics.com\/j\/jayz.html\">some lyrics online<\/a>: \u201cMy mind is infested \u2026 Dual level like duplexes,\/ in unity, my crew and me\/ commit atrocities like we got immunity.\u201d The combination of fire and regret can be thrilling. And in terms of wordplay, rhythm, and energy, the lines strike me as poetry. But, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/arts\/critics\/atlarge\/2010\/12\/06\/101206crat_atlarge_sanneh\">Kelefa Sanneh observes<\/a>, they may be even better as rap. \u2014<strong>Kate Waldman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At Kim\u2019s Video in the East Village, I found a copy of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/What-Remains-Life-Work-Sally\/dp\/B0013UQUQE\/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_c\">What Remains<\/a><\/em>, a moving documentary by Steven Cantor about the life and work of the photographer Sally Mann. Mann has an intense preoccupation with the life cycle, which is both fascinating and creepy. As the camera accompanies her around a forensic facility, she says, \u201cI love mummified skin \u2026 It looks like fabric or water or something &#8230; the way it undulates and moves, it seems alive.\u201d And: \u201cYou really have to realize that you\u2019re not there after you\u2019ve died. Your body is just a carapace.\u201d Terrifying, but also strangely enviable how she\u2019s come to terms with a subject many of us refuse to confront. \u2014<strong>Alexandra Zukerman<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This has been a week of emotionally taxing reading.
