In fin de si\u00e8cle Scotland, ice cream parlors \u201cwith mirrored walls and leather seats\u201d became \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thenewinquiry.com\/blogs\/the-austerity-kitchen\/it-ought-to-be-called-vice-cream\/\" target=\"_blank\">the scourge of the prudish bourgeoisie, who saw them as papist dens of vice<\/a>\u201d: \u201cAmong the more egregious crimes committed by the shops\u2019 proprietors was that of allowing young people of both sexes to intermingle and smoke. One inspector had said that he had seen girls of \u2018tender years\u2019 smoking cigarettes in the shop. They were also seen dancing to \u2018music supplied by a mouth organ\u2019 \u2026 It was concluded that ice cream shops embodied \u2018perfect iniquities of hell itself and ten times worse than any of the evils of the public house. They were sapping the morals of the youth of Scotland.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>Frances Kroll Ring, F. Scott Fitzgerald\u2019s longtime secretary, died last month. She had many critical tasks in his life, one of which was to rid him of his anti-Semitism: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/fitzgerald-and-the-jews?mbid=rss\" target=\"_blank\">It\u2019s entirely possible that Frances Kroll was the first Jewish person he ever spent any time with<\/a> \u2026 \u2018Jews lose clarity,\u2019 he jotted in his <em>Notebooks<\/em>. \u2018They get to look like old melted candles, as if their bodies were preparing to waddle\u2019 \u2026 As Kroll tells it, Fitzgerald displayed a great deal of curiosity about Jewishness, pestering her about Jewish characteristics and customs. He was fascinated by \u2018the Passover feast\u2019 and the practice of keeping <em>kosher<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Jack London spent his youth shoveling coal in a cannery, so he really, really, really wanted to become a successful writer and leave that hell behind. He had a good year in 1903: <em>The Call of the Wild <\/em>was serialized in the <em>Saturday Evening Post<\/em>, bringing the success that allowed him to write full-time. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_vault\/2015\/07\/20\/jack_london_the_author_s_writing_advice.html\" target=\"_blank\">He conveyed his newfound wisdom to aspirant writers in a piece called \u201cGetting Into Print.\u201d<\/a> Some of it\u2019s still true in this century: \u201cDon\u2019t quit your job to write unless there is none dependent on you.\u201d Other parts are not: \u201cFiction pays best of all, and when it is of a fair quality is more easily sold.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>When John Hersey\u2019s <em>Hiroshima<\/em> appeared in paperback, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicbooks.org\/artmedia\/the-look-of-the-book\" target=\"_blank\">it sported a new, terrifically misguided cover<\/a>, becoming what Paula Rabinowitz called \u201ca garish nightmare of American annihilation\u201d: \u201cIn this image, two people, not Japanese, are fleeing an explosion just beyond the frame. They are young, white, and stylish: she epitomizes New Look fashion in her loafers and gathered skirt, he sports pleated cuffs and a fitted trench coat \u2026 The cover artist, Geoffrey Biggs, wasn\u2019t trying to be deceptive. As he says, in a note that sits just before the copyright page, he was trying to be universal: \u2018I just drew two perfectly ordinary people\u2014like you or me\u2014and had them portray alarm, anxiety, and yet wild hope for survival as they run from man-made disaster in a big city\u2014a city like yours or mine.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>In which the Argentine writer Sergio Chejfec dissects names, first and foremost his own: \u201cSome years ago I had the idea of asking several writer friends if they wouldn\u2019t care to reflect on their own surname \u2026 This task\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asymptotejournal.com\/article.php?cat=Nonfiction&amp;id=78&amp;curr_index=22&amp;curPage=current\" target=\"_blank\">to speak about one\u2019s surname and to portray oneself through it<\/a>\u2014contains, I think, a touch of transcendence that brings us closer to death. We insert a mark\u2014which is our emblem, i.e. the commentary\u2014into an undefined series of fairly indistinct moments which is characterized precisely by the absence of marks \u2026 That common coin which is our surname, received at times like a baton, needs us so as to take on substance and, as it were, identity.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ice cream: delicious summertime treat or agent of moral turpitude?
