From the neck up, the <em>Nosferatu<\/em> director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2015\/07\/15\/nosferatu-director-f-w-murnaus-skull-stolen-satanists-suspected\/\" target=\"_blank\">has gone missing from his grave<\/a>, which sits about twelve miles out of Berlin. No reward has been set, and no word given on whether his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0013442\/quotes\" target=\"_blank\">lovely throat<\/a> remains intact.<\/li>\n<li>I do my best to ensure that this is a <em>Go Set a Watchman\u00ad<\/em>\u2013free space. But who can resist the chance to quote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/15\/nyregion\/the-name-atticus-acquires-an-unwelcome-association.html\" target=\"_blank\">a bunch of parents who named their sons after Atticus Finch, only to find that <em>Watchman<\/em> depicts him as a racist, segregationist clod<\/a>? \u201cWhen we first heard about the book, my wife said, \u2018Oh no, I hope Atticus didn\u2019t turn bad or something,\u2019 \u201d one father told the<em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em>. \u201cMaybe our son will grow up and be the more famous and distinguished Atticus, and maybe he\u2019ll get all the recognition.\u201d The name was the 370th most common in the country last year, and <em>Watchman<\/em>\u2019s first printing comprises two million copies. Young Atticus has his work cut out for him.<\/li>\n<li>Ethics professors spend their entire careers immersed in rigorous analysis of what\u2019s right and good. If you\u2019ve never met one, you could be forgiven for ranking them just under clergymen in their unswerving dedication to the moral life. <a href=\"http:\/\/aeon.co\/magazine\/philosophy\/how-often-do-ethics-professors-call-their-mothers\/\" target=\"_blank\">But ethicists are not, in fact, any more ethical than you or I<\/a>. A researcher examined their approaches to \u201cvoting in public elections, calling one\u2019s mother, eating the meat of mammals, donating to charity, littering, disruptive chatting and door-slamming during philosophy presentations, responding to student emails, attending conferences without paying registration fees, organ donation, blood donation, theft of library books, overall moral evaluation by one\u2019s departmental peers based on personal impressions, honesty in responding to survey questions, and joining the Nazi party in 1930s Germany.\u201d The result will stop the presses: \u201cFor the most part, ethicists behave no differently from professors of any other sort\u2014logicians, chemists, historians, foreign-language instructors.\u201d (They do donate to charities more regularly and eat less meat, though.)<\/li>\n<li>When the Guatemalan writer Eduardo Halfon published his first novel, he had a terrifying encounter with a reader of sorts: \u201cHe smiled and shook my hand and even said he was sorry to bother me at home. But he walked in without being asked, and <a href=\"http:\/\/electricliterature.com\/better-not-go-saying-too-much-eduardo-halfon-on-literature-paranoia-and-leaving-guatemala\/#.Vaa-w3YJOzw.twitter\" target=\"_blank\">immediately, as he sat down on one of the sofas, took out a big black gun<\/a> and placed it loudly on the living room table \u2026 He said that Hitler was one of his heroes. He said that Hitler was one of the greatest of men. He said that he admired how Hitler always knew exactly how to dispose of his enemies. He said that we should all learn from Hitler. He then asked me if I understood and I managed to stutter that I did and he grabbed his gun from the table, got up, and walked silently out of my house.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The trials and triumphs of <a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/a-race-against-time-editing-saul-bellows-last-novel\/\" target=\"_blank\">editing Saul Bellow\u2019s last novel<\/a>, <em>Ravelstein<\/em>: \u201cAs he homed in on something that was bothering him, you\u2019d hear first a deep rasping, the audible intakes of breath growing sharper. Then he\u2019d look up. \u2018This isn\u2019t working,\u2019 he\u2019d say. More breathing. Then, \u2018Let\u2019s try this.\u2019 At this point, I would start writing, taking down his words. Word by word a new paragraph would emerge and take the place of the older one, stronger, sharper than what was there before. Even as I read it out to him, I\u2019d see how he\u2019d changed it for the better. Whatever had jarred in the earlier version had gone.
