I was eager to discuss the recent cover story on a New York City tabloid. It featured a homeless man who lives in my neighborhood, and I was indignant on his behalf. I knew my dad would have read the piece closely and would have strong opinions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see that cover story?\u201d I demanded, rhetorically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d said my dad. \u201cWe\u2019re not reading any newspapers these days. Or watching any news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh,\u201d I said. \u201cWhy?\u201d <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were getting too involved in politics, and the state of the world was too depressing. We decided we needed a break. So now we only watch movies and the early seasons of <em>Mad Men<\/em>. Except we\u2019ve watched all the DVDs the library has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, okay,\u201d I said. \u201cI wanted to talk to you about this one story, but I guess you haven\u2019t been following it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, of course not,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I explained the situation. \u201cI\u2019m actually thinking about writing a letter to the editor,\u201d I said. \u201cI mean, if they\u2019d bothered to ask anyone in the neighborhood, including that store where he sleeps, anyone would have said that he\u2019s a really nice guy and has lived here for years and just minded his own business. I mean, he needs help, of course, but I thought it was really unfair. And cruel, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFleet Street 101,\u201d said my dad. \u201cDon\u2019t ask any questions whose answers might ruin your story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long is your news cleanse?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot sure,\u201d he said. \u201cBut for now, unless it\u2019s a headline on the Gmail welcome page, we don\u2019t know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wondered whether they planned to keep it up through my wedding, a week later, to avoid any political arguments. Although, on the other hand, it would be very odd if they didn\u2019t know what was going on in the world and couldn\u2019t discuss any current events, Rip Van Winkle style.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell I think you should know,\u201d I said, \u201cthat Mom seemed very up-to-date on the Harper Lee story. I think she\u2019s been cheating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe may have read about it in a non-news context,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure that\u2019s a thing,\u201d I said. \u201cBut anyway, I\u2019ll tell you if they run my letter.
