The poet Stephen Burt argues that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/the-persistence-of-litmags\" target=\"_blank\">a new journal simply needs a raison d\u2019\u00eatre<\/a>: it should seek to fill a \u201cgap that earlier journals failed to fill, a new form of pleasure, a new kind of writing, an alliance with a new or under-chronicled social movement, a constellation of authors for whom the future demand for work exceeds present supply, a program that will actually change some small part of some literary readers\u2019 tastes.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2015\/jul\/07\/greek-tragedy-aeschylus-migrants-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\">What can the Greek tragedies tell us about the current Mediterranean refugee crises<\/a>?\u00a0Aeschylus\u2019s 470 <small>B.C.<\/small> play, <em>The Suppliants<\/em>,<i> <\/i>concerns the fifty daughters of the Egyptian king Danaus, who flee Africa and seek asylum in Greece. Fitting then that a new production of the play is being reimagined in modern-day Sicily, where \u201cAfrican refugees beg at traffic lights,\u201d and is being staged in the ancient Greek theater of Syracuse, in Sicily.<\/li>\n<li>What can the inmates at a Missouri prison tell us about the evolution of language? In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/crime\/2015\/07\/prison_slang_prison_inmates_in_missouri_got_together_and_made_a_lexicon.html\" target=\"_blank\">compiling a lexicon of facility-specific slang<\/a>,\u00a0they found that a <em>viking <\/em>is a \u201cprisoner\u00a0with poor hygiene,\u201d a <em>kite<\/em> is \u201can informal message sent by a prisoner,\u201d and a <em>pumpkin <\/em>is, you guessed it, \u201ca term used for new arrivals\u201d (but not for the reason you might expect). After all, \u201ca dictionary is not a book of rules but a description of language as it is used in real life at a particular moment in time,\u201d says English professor Paul Lynch, who volunteers at the prison.<\/li>\n<li>Jerry Seinfeld thinks that political correctness is killing comedy;\u00a0he doesn\u2019t perform at college campuses because \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/06\/13\/the-lefts-outrage-at-jerry-seinfeld-proves-his-point\/\" target=\"_blank\">they\u2019re so PC<\/a>.\u201d it wasn\u2019t always that way:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2015\/07\/snl-national-lampoon-live-from-new-york-drunk-stoned-brilliant-dead\/397652\/\" target=\"_blank\">American college humor is historically steeped in offensiveness<\/a>. Take <em>National Lampoon<\/em>, an offshoot of the\u00a0<em>The Harvard Lampoon<\/em> and precursor to <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>, for example, where \u201cgetting a rise out of people was precisely the goal, and the magazine was steadfast in its dedication to what it saw as a decidedly non-partisan approach to humor.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>This week in the perils of the modern age: the Russian government released a public-awareness campaign highlighting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/russian-government-issues-guide-to-avoiding-hazardous-selfies\/\" target=\"_blank\">the dangers of taking a selfie<\/a>. With a little help from Google Translate, we learn that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mvd.ru\/safety_selfie\" target=\"_blank\">when a person is trying to take a picture of himself<\/a>\u2014he scattered attention, he lost his balance, he does not look around and did not feel in danger.\u201d Have fun this summer.
