It\u2019s been done. Diderot spent more than twenty years writing and editing his <em>Encyclop\u00e9die, <\/em>a French translation of one of the first English-language encyclopedias. Diderot, however, transformed the original by conceiving of his \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/ideas\/2015\/07\/04\/the-great-and-cursed-work-that-was-encyclopedie\/Bi3vN1P00CnRwNvrZqowhL\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">as a fully interactive text<\/a>,\u201d complete with footnotes and appendices that serve the era\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/ideas\/2015\/07\/04\/the-great-and-cursed-work-that-was-encyclopedie\/Bi3vN1P00CnRwNvrZqowhL\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">version of hyperlinks<\/a>, cross-listings, which take the reader to other \u2018sites\u2019 in the encyclopedia.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Experimental composer Conlon Nancarrow utilized the player piano for his musical studies because \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/gallery\/2015\/jun\/24\/nancarrow-prince-player-piano\/\" target=\"_blank\">he was drawn to the technical possibilities of the machine<\/a>, which can play faster and with greater precision than the most virtuosic pianist.\u201d He applied congruent ratios to separate tempos and hand-punched cards while creating his unplayable, weirdly enjoyable tunes.<\/li>\n<li>Robert Louis Stevenson may have been an egomaniac and brilliant fantasist, but he was also quite ill throughout his life. While visiting him in Samoa, where he would be buried at forty-four, historian\u00a0Henry Adams said of Stevenson, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/humanities\/2015\/julyaugust\/feature\/treasure-island-author-robert-louis-stevenson-was-sickly-man-robu\" target=\"_blank\">Imagine a man so thin and emaciated that he looked like a bundle of sticks in a bag<\/a>, with a head and eyes morbidly intelligent and restless.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>All hail the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/object-of-intrigue-the-devil-s-bible\" target=\"_blank\">Devil\u2019s Bible<\/a>,\u00a0a thirteeth-century, wood-bound anomaly that is more than three feet long and comprises 620\u00a0pages. Officially named the <em>Codex Gigas<\/em>, it\u2019s fabled to have been written by a banished monk, who resolved \u201cto write the world\u2019s biggest book in one night.
