Her masculine superiority lies in the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2015\/07\/the-manliness-of-joan-didion.html\" target=\"_blank\">glacial emotional distance<\/a>\u201d of her prose, which is better than yours. Her coolness astounds: in her essay, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vogue.com\/3241115\/joan-didion-self-respect-essay-1961\/\" target=\"_blank\">On Self-Respect<\/a>,\u201d she writes that people who have it, \u201care willing to invest something of themselves; they may not play at all, but when they do play, they know the odds.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Ottessa Moshfegh, winner of the 2013 Plimpton Prize, talks with Sarah Gerard <a href=\"http:\/\/penguinrandomhouse.ca\/hazlitt\/feature\/page-three-interview-ottessa-moshfegh\" target=\"_blank\">about keeping a notebook<\/a>: \u201cWhen I\u2019m writing to myself, I\u2019m really trying to process something, and it usually has to do with writing out my delusion and then trying to interpret what that delusion might be in service of, and then trying to comfort myself about the anxiety that the delusion was helping me cope with.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Apple reversed its decision to ban historical video games that depict the battle flag of the Confederate States of America. Copies of <em>Gone with the Wind<\/em> and <em>The Red Badge of Courage<\/em> weren\u2019t being pulped during the recent public outcry against flying the Confederate flag at certain state capitols, nor were <em>Cold Mountain<\/em> or <em>Glory <\/em>taken off the iTunes store. This reminds gamers, yet again, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/killing-time\/2015\/07\/dont-dismiss-history-video-games-trivial-its-no-less-scholarly-documentaries\" target=\"_blank\">that games are seen not as a scholarly pursuit<\/a>, that they do not merit serious consideration alongside films and books on their subject matter.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>While we\u2019re talking about America, it seems our literary canon isn\u2019t fit for television. Consider the numerous Jane Austen adaptations, the massive success of <em>Downton Abbey<\/em>, and the lack of a critically acclaimed film version of any Faulkner novel. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2015\/07\/masterpiece-american-literature-british-literature-tv-rebecca-eaton-aspen-ideas\/397718\/\" target=\"_blank\">Are American novels too dark for TV<\/a>, or has\u00a0Hollywood locked up the rights for\u00a0most major American titles? As Rebecca Eaton, executive producer of\u00a0<em>Masterpiece<\/em>, says, \u201cThe reasons that we haven\u2019t are twofold \u2026 One is money, the second is money. And the third is money.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Which reminds me:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobinmag.com\/2015\/07\/starving-artists-grizzly-bear-poverty-ubi\/\" target=\"_blank\">culture isn\u2019t free<\/a>, but our post-Napster, digitalized-content world still operates as if it were. The trouble is, \u201cif individual artists cannot make a living from their creative work, they will eventually throw in the towel,\u201d and it\u2019s important that \u201clarge corporations do not monopolize the cultural sphere.\u201d Wrest control of culture from the ruling class.
