Now <a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/the-throwback-special\/\" target=\"_blank\">you can see them here<\/a>\u2014including a particularly enchanting representation of an oviraptor &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>With his suicide, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2015\/06\/rewriting-of-david-foster-wallace.html?om_rid=AADZay&amp;om_mid=_BVkvVDB9DLuC9B\" target=\"_blank\">David Foster Wallace set into motion a saccharine revisionism<\/a> that has now, with the release of the movie <em>The End of the Tour<\/em>, reached full power. The film is \u201chigh-gloss true-story after-school special\u201d; the writer is gone; a weird kind of self-help saint has taken his place. \u201cA writer who courted contradiction and paradox, who could come on as a curmudgeon and a scold, who emerged from an avant-garde tradition and never retreated into conventional realism, he has been reduced to a wisdom-dispensing sage on the one hand and shorthand for the Writer As Tortured Soul on the other \u2026 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>Are you lost on the roadside of figurative language? Fumbling in the dark through the land of the simile? Friend, consult the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/jun\/30\/metaphor-map-charts-the-images-that-structure-our-thinking?CMP=share_btn_tw\" target=\"_blank\">Metaphor Map<\/a>, \u201cwhich contains more than 14,000 metaphorical connections sourced from four million pieces of lexical data, some of which date back to 700 <small>AD<\/small>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re feeling down, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/browbeat\/2015\/06\/29\/books_for_dixie_children_what_i_learned_from_reading_all_the_pro_confederate.html\" target=\"_blank\">spend a little time with pro-Confederacy children\u2019s books<\/a>, and you\u2019ll feel no better at all. In fact, you\u2019ll enjoy only a sense of deep inner turmoil. In Debra West Smith\u2019s <em>Young<\/em> <em>Heroes of the Confederacy<\/em>, for instance, \u201creaders are told that the children of a particular plantation-owning family were always taught to respect their slaves; on the next page, the patriarch is horse-whipping a cook \u2026 In one of the book\u2019s rare direct mentions of slavery, Smith compares slavery to a foreign diet: \u2018Whether we grow up eating snails in France, sushi in Japan, or crawfish in Louisiana, the foods we know are what we consider to be \u201cnormal.\u201d \u2019 True so far as it goes, but Smith never quite gets around to saying directly that slave-owners, \u2018known from their diaries and letters to be moral people,\u2019 were doing anything worse than eating something icky.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In which two \u201cunbearably sad\u201d newish novels with <em>life <\/em>in their titles face off: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2015\/06\/two-lives-on-hanya-yanagihara-and-atticus-lish.html\">A Little Life <\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2015\/06\/two-lives-on-hanya-yanagihara-and-atticus-lish.html\" target=\"_blank\">versus<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2015\/06\/two-lives-on-hanya-yanagihara-and-atticus-lish.html\"> Preparation for the Next Life<\/a><\/em>. \u201cIn <em>A Little Life<\/em>, the dirt is on the inside, hiding in a shadowy group of monks and suburban pedophiles, and in the psyche if their victim; in <em>Preparation for the Next Life<\/em>, it\u2019s on the outside\u2014it\u2019s on our streets and our food and our national conscience.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Summer issue features illustrations by Jason Novak for the first installment of Chris Bachelder\u2019s new novel, The Throwback Special.
