Pintscher\u2019s score was written in response to Twombly\u2019s painting; Twombly\u2019s painting was composed in response to music, that of French composer Pierre Henry, a pioneer of musique concr\u00e8te. Members of the JACK were, in turn, influenced that evening by their very proximity to Twombly\u2019s painting: \u201cThe music requires so much concentration,\u201d said violist and director John Pickford Richards, \u201cand I felt that the painting was giving me concentration while we were playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bigbentears.theparisreview.org\/bigbentears#chapter-222246\">Chapter six of our series \u201cBig, Bent Ears\u201d<\/a> details this curious network of connections, which Richards calls a \u201cdaisy chain of beautiful responses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another one: Before the Morgan exhibition, Twombly\u2019s painting hadn\u2019t hung in New York since 1985, and Pintscher\u2019s composition had never been performed alongside the painting. And no one had ever filmed a concert at the Morgan Library. Rock Fish Stew\u2019s video of that evening, which is part of chapter six, is witness to this extraordinary confluence and is itself an element of it. Twombly called his <em>Treatise on the Veil (Second Version)<\/em> \u201ca time line without time,\u201d which is rather like a story without a beginning, middle, and end.
