\"\"\n>1:00 A.M.<\/strong> Time to do some serious reading online. Nah! Read about the Steve Martin imbroglio<\/a> at the 92nd Street Y. Skip over to a piece on Google and Groupon<\/a> (best part: Andrew \u201cMason, Groupon\u2019s chief executive, declined an earlier interview request, adding that he would talk \u2018only if you want to talk about my other passion, building miniature dollhouses.\u2019\u201d) Listen to some Beth Orton, which always makes me think of a former boyfriend\/jackass, who introduced me to her music\u2014a shame, because I like you Beth!\u2014so I switch to Fleetwood Mac\u2019s \u201cSara,\u201d a song I love because it scorns the clich\u00e9d drum climax interlude. The song builds and builds and never resolves. <\/p>\n

\"\"Then my surfing goes to a dark place. Read Gawker<\/a> story on whereabouts of Julian Assange, followed by a New York Times<\/em> story on the suicide of the suspect in the murder of Ronni Chasen<\/a>, a Hollywood publicist.<\/p>\n

Robert Scoble<\/a> pulls me from my death spiral. Thank you, man. Listen to his interview with Kevin Systrom<\/a>, a cofounder of the Internet sensation Instagram. I like listening to company founders tell their stories, although I\u2019m more interested in their tone and salesmanship than what they actually do. Systrom\u2019s was confident, controlling, and mildly dismissive.<\/p>\n

Dip my toe into the Times<\/em> story on obesity surgery<\/a>. Decide I\u2019d rather think of something besides Lap-Bands before bed \u2026 like my to-do list! It\u2019s three pages long and includes items like \u201cRead Wired<\/em> story on coupons\u201d and \u201cLook up foodie episode of South Park<\/em>\u201d\u2014plus a whole host of actual work and responsibility, like \u201cFigure out health insurance\u201d and \u201cSign Addie up for ballet.\u201d <\/p>\n

DAY FIVE<\/h3>\n

\n>ALL DAY<\/strong> Long thread of meetings. <\/p>\n

\n>8:30 P.M.<\/strong> News flash, found via @ErickSchonfeld<\/a>: Google-Groupon deal is off. Shocker! (Not.) Move on to @RachelSklar<\/a>, who leads me to Mediaite \u201cWhat Machiavelli Would Have Thought of Wikileaks: A Short History of Undiplomatic Diplomats<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"Pause for requisite look at real estate. Fantasize about living in this<\/a> Frank Lloyd Wright home.<\/p>\n

Read on Twitter that Elaine Kaufman died. Best nugget in her obit<\/a>: \u201cAfter an argument with her, Norman Mailer vowed never to return and wrote her an unflattering letter. She scribbled \u2018Boring\u2019 across the top and sent it back to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Listen to \u201cFalling Slowly,\u201d which has never sounded as magical since Once<\/em> costars Glen Hansard and Mark\u00e9ta Irglov\u00e1 broke up. <\/p>\n

\n>12:00 A.M.<\/strong> Come across a story about Nicolas Sarkozy chasing a dog chasing a rabbit<\/a> through his office, while Hillary Clinton looked on. <\/p>\n

\"\"Read a ton of Eater<\/a> and Curbed<\/a>. Tossed in a little HuffPo, too. Troublingly, I will look through any slide show<\/a> on Princess Letitzia. <\/p>\n

Come across the cookbook roundup<\/a> in The New York Times Book Review<\/em>, which identified me as a \u201cformer columnist.\u201d Last time I checked I\u2019ve been a columnist since 2004. Plot witty and devastating e-mail about correction, but then get sleepy.<\/p>\n

DAY SIX<\/h3>\n

\n>MORNING<\/strong> I no longer read the Times<\/em> in print, and this entirely changed the tenor of my Saturday mornings. No more guilt! No more pressure to work my way through it. I can now read the paper persistently online all through the week. Since there is no end to it, no more completion anxiety!<\/p>\n

\n>12:00 P.M.<\/strong> Brave Fifth Avenue crush to go to Coolhunting for Gap<\/a>, a pop-up store, to sign books. <\/p>\n

\n>8:30 P.M.<\/strong> Read Alix Browne\u2019s story on Alice O\u2019Malley\u2019s \u201cavailablism<\/a>.\u201d Tad pointed me to a Modern Love column by Jenny Browne<\/a>. It is the best essay I\u2019ve read in the past year.<\/p>\n

\"\"Dig into Slate\u2019s 80 over 80<\/a>\u2014focusing on the women. Helen Gurley Brown is still alive\u2014didn\u2019t know that! I bet she\u2019s had more sex than I have. Eat Middle Eastern food while watching a mediocre 30 Rock<\/em>. Still no TV tables!<\/p>\n

Tad and I watched a three-minute cooking show\/interstitial on NY 1: A man in a random apartment cooked pork chops and served them over an apple salad. The food looked fine, but his cabinets were so much cheesier than we\u2019re used to seeing on food segments; they\u2019d never do in It\u2019s Complicated<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Twitter led me to HuffPo’s \u201cBest Cookbooks of 2010<\/a>,\u201d which mentioned the Tournament of Cookbooks along with Amazon, NPR<\/em>, and The Guardian<\/em>\u2014we\u2019re legit! <\/p>\n

DAY SEVEN<\/h3>\n

\"\"\n>11:00 A.M.<\/strong> We buy a Christmas tree from our ritzy, top-secret Frazier Fir outlet\u2014namely, the shivering kid in front of Key Food\u2014and lug it home. Our four-year-old twins help us decorate, smashing two ornaments to smithereens in their zeal. Listen to ancient Time-Life Christmas album, which includes my favorite holiday song, \u201cChristmas in Dixie<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n>7:30 P.M.<\/strong> Tad built a fire, I made cocoa, and we read a fabulous pop-up edition of The Night Before Christmas<\/em>, by Robert Sabuda, to the twins.<\/p>\n

\n>8:30 P.M.<\/strong> Read some David Carr<\/a>, whose work is like eating your vegetables, but he makes them taste like dessert. And found a nice little gem, this<\/a> Lamborghini story.<\/p>\n

My father-in-law sent a link to this \n“>Random Act of Culture<\/a>: Opera Company of Philadelphia shows up at Macy\u2019s and just begins singing the Hallelujah Chorus. I cried at the end. All the shoppers were so pleased!<\/p>\n

\"\"\n>12:00 A.M.<\/strong> Someone on Facebook e-mails me about a piece on the GE Energy Smart LED lightbulb<\/a>. It has ceramic fins! And it last like ten years. The post, which appeared in T<\/em>, was written by one of my favorite style writers, Pilar Viladas. <\/p>\n

Summary of week: I have a lot to do if I want to get on that 80-over-80 list. It\u2019s so much easier just to hang out and be a douche-b.<\/p>\n
