I like listening to company founders tell their stories, although I\u2019m more interested in their tone and salesmanship than what they actually do. Troublingly, I will look through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/news\/princess-letizia\">any slide show<\/a> on Princess Letitzia. <\/p>\n<p>Come across <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/05\/books\/review\/CookbookBox-t.html\">the cookbook roundup<\/a> in <em>The New York Times Book Review<\/em>, which identified me as a \u201cformer columnist.\u201d Last time I checked I\u2019ve been a columnist since 2004. Plot witty and devastating e-mail about correction, but then get sleepy.<\/p>\n<h3>DAY SIX<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"<br \/>\n>MORNING<\/strong> I no longer read the <em>Times<\/em> in print, and this entirely changed the tenor of my Saturday mornings. No more guilt! No more pressure to work my way through it. I can now read the paper persistently online all through the week. Since there is no end to it, no more completion anxiety!<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"<br \/>\n>12:00 P.M.<\/strong> Brave Fifth Avenue crush to go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolhunting.com\/gap\/\">Coolhunting for Gap<\/a>, a pop-up store, to sign books. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"<br \/>\n>8:30 P.M.<\/strong> Read Alix Browne\u2019s story on Alice O\u2019Malley\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/05\/t-magazine\/5well-moon-t.html\">availablism<\/a>.\u201d Tad pointed me to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/28\/fashion\/28Modern.html?ref=fashion\">Modern Love column by Jenny Browne<\/a>. It is the best essay I\u2019ve read in the past year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/gurleybrown-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8738\" \/>Dig into Slate\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2276194\">80 over 80<\/a>\u2014focusing on the women. Helen Gurley Brown is still alive\u2014didn\u2019t know that! I bet she\u2019s had more sex than I have. Eat Middle Eastern food while watching a mediocre <em>30 Rock<\/em>. Still no TV tables!<\/p>\n<p>Tad and I watched a three-minute cooking show\/interstitial on NY 1: A man in a random apartment cooked pork chops and served them over an apple salad. The food looked fine, but his cabinets were so much cheesier than we\u2019re used to seeing on food segments; they\u2019d never do in <em>It\u2019s Complicated<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter led me to HuffPo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/12\/05\/best-cookbooks-of-2010-christmas-gifts_n_781479.html#s198501\">\u201cBest Cookbooks of 2010<\/a>,\u201d which mentioned the Tournament of Cookbooks along with Amazon, <em>NPR<\/em>, and <em>The Guardian<\/em>\u2014we\u2019re legit! <\/p>\n<h3>DAY SEVEN<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/3077525761_2683f0e8b3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-8740\" \/><strong  style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"<br \/>\n>11:00 A.M.<\/strong> We buy a Christmas tree from our ritzy, top-secret Frazier Fir outlet\u2014namely, the shivering kid in front of Key Food\u2014and lug it home. Our four-year-old twins help us decorate, smashing two ornaments to smithereens in their zeal. Listen to ancient Time-Life Christmas album, which includes my favorite holiday song, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Gz2IFXaMMw8\">Christmas in Dixie<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong  style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"<br \/>\n>7:30 P.M.<\/strong> Tad built a fire, I made cocoa, and we read  a fabulous pop-up edition of <em>The Night Before Christmas<\/em>, by Robert Sabuda, to the twins.<\/p>\n<p><strong  style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"<br \/>\n>8:30 P.M.<\/strong> Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/06\/business\/media\/06carr.html\">some David Carr<\/a>, whose work is like eating your vegetables, but he makes them taste like dessert. And found a nice little gem, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/05\/automobiles\/collectibles\/05EGO.html\">this<\/a> Lamborghini story.<\/p>\n<p>My father-in-law sent a link to this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wp_RHnQ-jgU<br \/>\n&#8220;>Random Act of Culture<\/a>: Opera Company of Philadelphia shows up at Macy\u2019s and just begins singing the Hallelujah Chorus. I cried at the end. All the shoppers were so pleased!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/01-viladas-lightbulb-tmagSF-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8741\" \/><strong  style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"<br \/>\n>12:00 A.M.<\/strong> Someone on Facebook e-mails me about <a href=\"http:\/\/tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/01\/seeing-the-light\/\">a piece on the GE Energy Smart LED lightbulb<\/a>. It has ceramic fins! And it last like ten years. The post, which appeared in <em>T<\/em>, was written by one of my favorite style writers, Pilar Viladas. <\/p>\n<p>Summary of week: I have a lot to do if I want to get on that 80-over-80 list.
