That honor, he often said, went to one composed the next year: <small>GRANNY EXECUTED IN HER PINK PAJAMAS<\/small>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Let\u2019s pause to remember the golden era of American pharmaceuticals\u2014the turn of the twentieth century, when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/narcotics-in-medicine?utm_content=buffer2ecb6&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">patent medicine was ubiquitous<\/a> and any old ailment could help you score some heroin. \u201cIf it doesn\u2019t actually cure your cold, the high dose of cocaine might\u00a0trick you into thinking otherwise.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Yesterday marked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2015\/06\/pepyss-diary-350\" target=\"_blank\">the 350th anniversary of the Great Plague of London<\/a>, which claimed some seventy thousand lives. The diary of Samuel Pepys provides a rich account of the events: \u201cFrom the moment he saw the red crosses on that boiling June day, through September when the death rate peaked at 7,000 a week, and until January 1666 when it began to wane, Pepys chronicled the plague\u2019s progress through narrow alleys and grand mansions. He tells of the pest-houses and pest-coaches, and how the Lord Mayor forbade citizens from going out after dark so that the sick could \u2018go abroad for ayre\u2019 and funeral corteges pass through without infecting the healthy.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In happier anniversaries: <em>Clueless<\/em>, everyone\u2019s favorite \u201cadaptation\u201d of <em>Emma<\/em>, turns twenty this summer; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2015\/06\/clueless-oral-history-20-anniversary\" target=\"_blank\">a new oral history<\/a> tells us how \u201cas if!\u201d and \u201cway harsh\u201d entered the lexicon.<\/li>\n<li>Who doesn\u2019t love <a href=\"http:\/\/nautil.us\/issue\/25\/water\/the-dueling-weathermen-of-the-1800s\" target=\"_blank\">a good pair of sparring meteorologists<\/a>? In the nineteenth century, one William Redfield had developed a momentous theory of whirling winds, and he was the toast of weathermen everywhere until some hotshot named James Espy tried to derail him. \u201cNot only was Espy\u2019s prose bold, it also had a pompous edge. Academic discourse was governed by the same strict code of gentlemanly civility that dominated intellectual society, from politics to religion.
