{"id":86443,"date":"2015-06-08T14:00:03","date_gmt":"2015-06-08T18:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=86443"},"modified":"2015-06-08T14:22:46","modified_gmt":"2015-06-08T18:22:46","slug":"where-they-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2015\/06\/08\/where-they-live\/","title":{"rendered":"Where They Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_86448\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/book-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86448\" class=\"wp-image-86448\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/book-6.jpg\" alt=\"book-6\" width=\"600\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/book-6.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/book-6-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-86448\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guy Laram\u00e9e, via This Is Colossal<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The French Canadian artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guylaramee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guy Laram\u00e9e<\/a>, whom we\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/tag\/guy-laramee\/\" target=\"_blank\">featured<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2012\/06\/20\/a-tsunami-of-pages-occupygaddis\/\" target=\"_blank\">before<\/a> on the <em>Daily<\/em>, has a new series of book sculptures, \u201cOnde Elles Moran\u201d\u2014\u201cWhere They Live.\u201d Laram\u00e9e spent nine months on the series, which features Brazilian birds painted on secondhand, linen-bound Cl\u00e1ssicos Jackson\u2014something akin to our Great Books of the Western World, those generically handsome tomes seemingly designed to collect dust on attractive shelves\u2014with the birds\u2019 native habitats carved into the pages.<\/p>\n<p>Laram\u00e9e has become known for his book sculptures, which he began about five years ago; he regards books as raw material in need of processing, and he\u2019s proven unafraid to go at them with a chain saw. But he can also approach the medium with a miniaturist\u2019s attention to detail, as demonstrated in the topography of the landscapes here; he uses <span class=\"show\"><span class=\"caption\">oil, inks, pigments and dry pastels, crayon, fixative, and beeswax<\/span><\/span>. \u201cIt all started in a sand blaster cabinet,\u201d he said <a href=\"http:\/\/anobiumlit.com\/2012\/04\/24\/interview-with-guy-laramee-artist-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">in an interview with<\/a> <em>ANOBIUM<\/em> about the sculptures\u2019 genesis:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I put a book in there\u2014stupid idea\u2014and there it was. Within seconds I saw the landscape, the drama, Borges, the little people who lived in books, everything \u2026 I never really totally forget that these are books, that my raw material is not wood, not even paper, but a book. At times I\u2019m lost in the project, in the landscape. But a book is a book, structurally. The pages are not glued, so you have to respect the structure, from the binding of each pages to the cover, otherwise pages will fly away when you release the
