The contributors, who hid behind noms de plume, imitated both one another and themselves, and passed themselves off as sometimes real and sometimes fictitious characters.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>When you\u2019re next inclined to wring your hands over the state of mass media, don\u2019t\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/121949\/internet-content?utm_content=buffer3d10c&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">it\u2019s always been full of down-market sensationalism<\/a>, and it\u2019s always appealed to our inner morons. Yes, even the<em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em>: \u201cHere\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/timesmachine.nytimes.com\/timesmachine\/1884\/07\/07\/103622475.html?pageNumber=8\" target=\"_blank\">a story from July 7, 1884<\/a> that has all the Facebook-ready hyperbole and anthropomorphism of \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/laraparker\/llamas-who-just-dont-give-a-shit#.auDedGr0w\" target=\"_blank\">15 Llamas Who Just Do Not Give A Damn<\/a>\u2019: \u2018<small>THE PARROT\u2019S LITTLE JOKE.; HE HIDES HIMSELF FROM HIS MISTRESS AND THROWS HER INTO A FIT OF ANGUISH.<\/small>\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>The Bloomsbury Group has inspired new novels, a ballet, a TV series, exhibitions, and\u2014lest we forget\u2014an economics prize; it sometimes seems the group\u2019s reputation has never been higher. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/jun\/05\/bloomsbury-booming-legacy-celebrate-virginia-woolf\" target=\"_blank\">But it is not long since the most recent round of Bloomsbury-bashing, a century-old sport<\/a> often said to have started when the painter Wyndham Lewis fell out spectacularly with Roger Fry, over (of all things) a commission to create a display for the Daily Mail\u2019s Ideal Home show \u2026 By the 1950s, Bloomsbury\u2019s unfashionableness was a fact. Writings by the survivors took on an aggrieved and defensive tone: literary critic and broadcaster Desmond MacCarthy dismissed the term Bloomsbury as a \u2018regional adjective\u2019; Clive Bell claimed they had never been more than a group of friends; Vanessa suggested Bloomsbury was finished before the first world war.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Ah, sweet 1.618, the golden ratio, that ancient proportion of aesthetic bliss, that geometric path to pulchritude\u2014there are those among us who hold it up as the sine qua non of artistic appeal. And yet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/06\/celebrities-go-golden-ratios-knife\/?mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">if you rearrange celebrities\u2019 faces according the ratio<\/a>, you wind up in the realm of sheer disfigured horror.<\/li>\n<li>Sam Lipsyte on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/06\/08\/package-tour?intcid=mod-most-popular\" target=\"_blank\">time travel as a chance to right the world\u2019s wrongs<\/a>: \u201cthe do-gooder package tour, the warn-Pompeii-kill-Hitler itinerary. It\u2019s a dicey proposition, messing with the past.
