Coulrophobia is real, and it is systemic. But how do its victims feel? \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2015\/05\/fears-of-boswick-the-clown.html?mid=twitter_nymag\" target=\"_blank\">I want respect, and I don\u2019t want respect<\/a>,\u201d Boswick, a clown from San Francisco, has said. \u201cI want respect for who I am and my r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and how hard I work, how many classes I\u2019ve taken, and at the same time I think respect for clowning is the dumbest thing in the world. Why would you have respect for clowns? Clowns are the ones who\u2019re making fun of the world. If you respect the clown, the clown\u2019s doing something wrong.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Americans don\u2019t give French Canadians much respect, either\u2014and even if most of that can be blamed on Celine Dion, it\u2019s still time to make a change. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/too-different-and-too-familiar-the-challenge-of-french-canadian-literature\" target=\"_blank\">We might start by reading Raymond Bock\u2019s <em>Atavismes: Histoires<\/em><\/a>, now available in English: \u201cReaders will need to break through its decidedly specific references: the book, a collection of thirteen short stories, makes few concessions to those unfamiliar with the particulars of Quebec culture\u2014a helpful appendix explains\u00a0<em>joual\u00a0<\/em>cursing (in which equivalents of <em>chalice<\/em> and <em>host<\/em> are two of the most vile expletives) and French Canadian touchstones such as the Quiet Revolution,\u00a0<em>les filles du roi<\/em>, and the folksinger Paul Pich\u00e9.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In which <a href=\"http:\/\/nyamcenterforhistory.org\/2015\/05\/22\/conan-doyles-poison-pen-and-the-adventure-of-the-devils-foot\/?utm_content=bufferfbd61&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur Conan Doyle experiments with drugs<\/a>\u2014specifically with gelsemium, a dried rhizome of yellow jasmine: \u201cA thick, black cloud swirled before my eyes, and my mind told me that in this cloud, unseen as yet, but about to spring out upon my appalled senses, lurked all that was vaguely horrible, all that was monstrous and inconceivably wicked in the universe.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>To look at a list of the most popular headlines on social media is to become deeply sad and afraid: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theawl.com\/2015\/05\/dead-sites-posting\" target=\"_blank\">publications\u2019 sensibilities have conformed to the platforms that send them visitors<\/a>; their sites have adopted the tone and language of social media; news and entertainment, mixed as ever, now mingle according the demands and preferences of the feeds into which they are deployed.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In Europe, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/31\/business\/international\/in-europe-fake-jobs-can-have-real-benefits.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">fiction is the new reality in the workplace<\/a>\u2014if you can\u2019t get a job, you can try to get a fake job. \u201cInside virtual companies, workers rotate through payroll, accounting, advertising and other departments. They also receive virtual salaries to spend within the make-believe economy. Some of the faux companies even hold strikes\u2014a common occurrence in France.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Face it, America: ours is a culture that hates clowns.
