Consider it a chance to see how successful writers got their start, in their own words\u2014it\u2019s a portrait of the artist as a beginner and a look at the creative process, in all its joy, abjection, delusion, and euphoria.<\/p>\n<p>Our second installment stars <strong>Gabrielle<\/strong> <strong>Bell<\/strong>, a cartoonist who began to self-publish her work in the late nineties. Every year she would release a new thirty-two page comic: <i>Book of Insomnia<\/i>, <i>Book of Sleep<\/i>, <i>Book of Black<\/i>, <i>Book of Lies<\/i>, <i>Book of Ordinary Things<\/i>. In 2003, these were collected in\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/indyworld.com\/all-artists\/gabrielle-bell\/when-im-old\/\" target=\"_blank\">When I\u2019m Old and Other Stories<\/a><\/em>, but before that, \u201cI was selling them for about three dollars each,\u201d she says, \u201cwhich is about how much they cost to print.\u201d She talks about her struggles to remain disciplined and the intensity of her yearning for a role model. \u201cI remember having fantasies of some great cartoonist just taking me under their wing and teaching me everything they knew &#8230; I was really struggling with depression a lot, I think &#8230; I was almost able to directly translate it into the comics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you missed yesterday\u2019s interview\u00a0with <strong>J.
