His new collection, <em>Breezeway<\/em>, expands the range and influence of what might be called his trash magic; reading his poems \u201cis sometimes unnerving, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/06\/01\/american-snipper-books-chiasson\" target=\"_blank\">as though somebody had given you your own garbage back as a gift<\/a>, cheerfully wrapped. Ashbery is nearly eighty-eight; more than ever, his style is a net for the weirdest linguistic flotsam.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/27\/arts\/design\/mary-ellen-mark-photographer-who-documented-difficult-subjects-dies-at-75.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Ellen Mark is dead at seventy-five<\/a>. She was known for the intimacy of her photographs and for her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/gallery\/2015\/may\/26\/mary-ellen-mark-legendary-photographs-in-pictures\" target=\"_blank\">unflinching choice of subjects<\/a>: prostitutes, homeless teenagers, mental patients, and heroin addicts. But her earlier goals were more modest: \u201cShe had two main ambitions in high school \u2026 to become the head cheerleader and to be popular with boys. She succeeded at both.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Nothing begets insanity like a bloody revolution\u2014and so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v37\/n10\/mike-jay\/the-wrong-head\" target=\"_blank\">the French Revolution seems to have left a preponderance of madness in its wake<\/a>. The journals of Philippe Pinel, a contemporary French physician, remark on the era\u2019s various delusions, such as \u201cthat of the clockmaker, convinced that he had already been guillotined. Somehow the verdict had been reversed, but his head had become confused with others in the basket and he had been given back someone else\u2019s \u2026 Pinel staged an intervention, this time by a fellow patient who cheerfully pointed out the absurdity of his delusion. The clockmaker \u2018retired confused amid the peals of laughter all around him and never again spoke of his change of head.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>This is graduation season, wedding season\u2014and Father\u2019s Day is just around the corner. You need gifts that bespeak of your intense thoughtfulness and generosity. Here\u2019s one: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2015\/may\/25\/wolfgang-amadeus-mozart-hair-lock-sotheby-auction\" target=\"_blank\">a gold locket containing a strand of Mozart\u2019s hair<\/a>. Estimated value: twelve thousand euros.<\/li>\n<li>Reminder: Los Angeles is a complicated place. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nplusonemag.com\/online-only\/city-by-city\/los-angeles-plays-itself\/\" target=\"_blank\">Growing up in L.A. taught me that beautiful people get away with practically anything<\/a>: it is an aesthetocracy. To be beautiful is to transcend, to move through the world frictionlessly, as consistently pleasant as the weather: temperate, no clouds, photo ready \u2026 It is possible to become so healthy that you become sick \u2026 It\u2019s a paradoxical lifestyle, self-improvement as an ethos.
