The body is reckless, but telling.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Walt Whitman, pop-music critic: in 1845, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/gallery\/2015\/may\/16\/art-singing-and-heart-singing\/\" target=\"_blank\">the poet published a brief review<\/a> in <em>Broadway Journal<\/em>, where he pays a hearty compliment to a family of singers: \u201cThe sight of them, as they are, puts one in mind of health and fresh air in the country, at sunrise\u2014the dewy, earthy fragrance that comes up then in the moisture, and touches the nostrils more gratefully than all the perfumes of the most ingenious chemist.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Herman Wouk turns one hundred this month. Give the guy a break. \u201cReaders under forty know Wouk, if they know him at all, as a name on the spine of a paperback shoved into a cottage bookshelf at the end of someone else\u2019s summer vacation\u2014or perhaps as the supplier of the raw material for Humphrey Bogart\u2019s epic performance as Captain Queeg of the USS Caine. What they don\u2019t know is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2015\/05\/herman-wouk-at-100-one-of-the-greatest-american-war-novelists\/393203\/?google_editors_picks=true\" target=\"_blank\">Herman Wouk has a fair claim to stand among the greatest American war novelists of them all<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOften when I\u2019m home alone, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/lifestyle\/2015\/05\/often-when-i-m-home-alone-only-thought-how-my-dead-body-might-be-found-helps-me\" target=\"_blank\">only the thought of how my dead body might be found helps me act proper<\/a> \u2026 I thought of this while going to the local deli to buy a carrot and a couple of onions. A long time ago, when I started living by myself, before my wife-to-be and I moved in together, I used to be very careful when I went to the grocer\u2019s for a carrot or a courgette to buy more than one\u2014for who, when cooking for one, ever needs more than one carrot?\u2014in case the grocer thought I had improper designs on the vegetable \u2026 These days, I do not give a damn. I am too busy palpating my solitude, as the tongue probes a gap in the teeth.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Paul Ford on \u201cNo Manifesto for Poetry Readings and Listservs and Magazines and \u2018Open Versatile Spaces Where Cultural Production Flourishes,\u2019 \u201d a new collaborative poem: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/message\/a-no-to-poem-6f5d7aea9f15\" target=\"_blank\">My own opinion of whether the poem is good or bad doesn\u2019t matter<\/a>. The poem makes me squirm; it makes me roll my eyes; it makes me angry at the world; and it makes me tired. I keep coming back to it.
