There are no periods, no commas, no semicolons \u2026 \u201d Stewart \u201cwanted to make a point about aboriginal culture, colonialism, and \u2018the blind acceptance of English language conventions in academia.\u2019 \u201d He conducted his oral exam last month; his teachers questioned him for hours. But in the end, he passed.<\/li>\n<li>What someone ought to do is write an entire dissertation using turn-of-the-century telegraphy abbreviations, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_vault\/2015\/05\/11\/history_of_telegraph_operators_abbreviations_used_by_telegraphers.html?wpsrc=fol_tw\" target=\"_blank\">as decoded in this 1901 book<\/a>: \u201cWr r ty gg r 9\u201d means \u201cWhere are they going for No. 9\u201d; \u201cIs tt exa tr et\u201d means \u201cIs that extra there yet?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Disclaimer: the remark above was not intended to senselessly valorize an outmoded technology. \u201cI\u2019ve heard many a nostalgist say there was something more, well, effortful, and therefore poetic, in the old system of walking for miles to a record shop only to discover they\u2019d just sold out. People become addicted to the weights and measures of their own experience: We value our own story and what it entails. But <a href=\"http:\/\/tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/05\/andrew-ohagan-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">we can\u2019t become hostages to the romantic notion that the past is always a better country<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>For the second time, the avant-garde company Elevator Repair Service is mounting a theatrical adaptation of <em>The Sound and the Fury<\/em>: \u201cEven if Faulkner isn\u2019t your thing, or if confusion of characters and time frames aren\u2019t, either, it\u2019s important to see the piece, if only to understand how scripts work\u2014and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/05\/18\/southern-gothic\" target=\"_blank\">how they transform the actors in the space of the stage<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/luckypeach.com\/anything-to-make-you-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\">In which Ottessa Moshfegh tries mayonnaise<\/a>: \u201cMayonnaise, to my mother, was like peanut butter to the French: disgusting, uncivilized, and impossible to find.
