Up and down Broadway\u2014displaying wares by American Apparel, blasting Bach, and hawking signed Roth novels in front of Zabar\u2019s, dressed in velvet by the Eighty-Sixth Street Uptown 1\u2014these are the folks who keep the neighborhood alive. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, I was perusing the stall of a certain bookseller when another customer\u2014a \u201ccharacter\u201d in a many-pocketed fishing-tackle vest\u2014strode up and began barraging the mild-mannered proprietor with\u00a0questions. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you always here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow\u2019d you meet your wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you teach?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have kids?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bet you\u2019re a good grandfather. Are you?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I take your picture?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong, none of the questions were\u00a0rude, or even particularly intrusive\u2014and the bookseller answered each one readily enough\u2014but the rapid-fire delivery was peculiar. After the customer had departed (having indeed taken a photograph), I complimented the owner on his equanimity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was quite the interrogation,\u201d I said, as I paged through a volume of collected Yeats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, well, you meet all sorts of people in this job,\u201d he shrugged. \u201cIt\u2019s usually easier just to smile and nod.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou meet some weirdos, I\u2019ll bet,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes all kinds,\u201d he said, disappointingly. Then, \u201cIf you like poetry, you should look at this table\u2014I have a whole bunch, some good ones.\u201d I didn\u2019t really want to buy any poetry, but I politely followed him over to the next table and looked over the books he handed me, making approving noises.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you like Ogden Nash?\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a really nice Modern Library edition. You\u2019d get a lot of doggerel, there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c \u2018Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker,\u2019 \u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I don\u2019t think that was Ogden Nash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, that was Dorothy Parker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure it was Ogden Nash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy Parker was the one who wrote about drinking, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, she\u2019s the one who said that a hangover is\u00a0\u2018the wrath of grapes.\u2019 And that \u2018I like to have a martini, \/ Two at the very most. \/ After three I\u2019m under the table, \/ after four I\u2019m under my host.\u2019 And she had a drinking problem. But she didn\u2019t say \u2018Candy is Dandy.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, it sounds like you know what you\u2019re talking about,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re probably right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, I\u2019m <em>pretty<\/em> sure it was Ogden Nash. In <em>Hard Lines<\/em>.
