By bringing biological concerns to English departments, he hoped to rescue the humanities from triviality: \u201cthe alternative is to let literature study keep spinning off into a corner of irrelevance to die.\u201d Today, perhaps unsurprisingly, his career \u201cis in a precarious place,\u201d but hey, at least he\u2019s writing trade books \u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commentarymagazine.com\/article\/love-songs-rip\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hardly anyone is writing love songs anymore<\/a>\u2014can we assume, from this, that hardly anyone is in love? \u201cThe traditional romantic love song has lately ceased to be as central to American pop music as it still was well into the \u201970s. For now, while the pop charts are laden with songs about love, that love is often rendered in an anti-romantic manner that is sharply at variance with how love was customarily portrayed during the golden age of American popular song.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aperture.org\/blog\/lynne-tillman-brush-fires-social-landscape\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lynne Tillman on David Wojnarowicz<\/a>, whose photo-book <em>Brush Fires in the Social Landscape<\/em> was published twenty years ago: \u201cIn the 1980s, being infected by HIV and developing AIDS was an unchosen, horrific fate, fatal. People were very frightened, and felt hopeless. Not every artist or writer responded as Wojnarowicz did. His responses were unique, thoroughly felt, and driven by an urgent necessity. In his time, his work was extraordinarily moving\u2014it stunned. It\u00a0will never be experienced again as it was then,\u00a0in that very dark moment.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOccasionally, unintentionally, triggered by a smell or an old tune, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/gallery\/2015\/apr\/29\/nadja-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\">my mind drifts to that time when Paris didn\u2019t resemble the USA at all<\/a>\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0\u201d Nadja Tesich, the star of Eric Rohmer\u2019s 1964 short film<em> Nadja \u00e0 Paris<\/em>, on the French New Wave and filmmaking in the Paris of yore.<\/li>\n<li>As a boy, Julian Barnes experienced an artistic awakening\u2014and it was Gustave Moreau who made the scales fall from his eyes. \u201cI was uncertain what to make of such work: exotic, bejeweled, and darkly glittering, with an odd mixture of private and public symbolism, little of which I could unscramble. Perhaps it was this mysteriousness that attracted me; and perhaps I admired Moreau the more because nobody told me to do so. But it was certainly here <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/may\/02\/julian-barnes-art-doesnt-capture-thrill-of-life\" target=\"_blank\">that I remember myself for the first time consciously looking at pictures, rather than being passively and obediently in their presence<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About a decade ago, Jonathan Gottschall pioneered \u201cliterary Darwinism,\u201d a school of thought that interprets literature through the prism of evolutionary desires.
