Billy looked at it. And suddenly, he realized that this animal had all the time been just as silent and motionless as the parrot. He put out a hand and touched it gently on the top of its back. The back was hard and cold, and when he pushed the hair to one side with his fingers, he could see the skin underneath, grayish black and dry and perfectly preserved. \u201cGood gracious me,\u201d he said. \u201cHow absolutely fascinating.\u201d He turned away from the dog and stared with deep admiration at the little woman beside him on the sofa. \u201cIt must be most awfully difficult to do a thing like that.\u201d \u201cNot in the least,\u201d she said. \u201cI stuff all my little pets myself when they pass away. Will you have another cup of tea?\u201d \u201cNo, thank you,\u201d Billy said. The tea tasted faintly of bitter almonds, and he didn\u2019t much care for it. \u201cYou did sign the book, didn\u2019t you?\u201d \u201cOh, yes.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s good. Because later on, if I happen to forget what you were called, then I could always come down here and look it up. I still do that almost every day with Mr. Mulholland and Mr. \u2026 Mr. \u2026\u201d \u201cTemple,\u201d Billy said, \u201cGregory Temple. Excuse my asking, but haven\u2019t there been any other guests here except them in the last two or three years?\u201d Holding her teacup high in one hand, inclining her head slightly to the left, she looked up at him out of the corners of her eyes and gave him another gentle little smile. \u201cNo, my dear,\u201d she said. \u201cOnly you.\u201d \u2014Roald Dahl, \u201cThe Landlady\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We all know that cyanide tastes like almonds. If something is almond-y, and you\u2019re somewhere sinister, well, mister, look out! You\u2019ve been poisoned. I first learned this from the Dahl story cited above\u2013or, more accurately, from the episode of <em><span style=\"font-family: Times;\">Alfred Hitchcock Presents<\/span><\/em> based on the story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But generally, one assumes, writers only know this themselves via hearsay. They know\u2014like the rest of us\u2014that cyanide <em><span style=\"font-family: Times;\">smells<\/span><\/em>\u00a0like \u201cbitter almonds.\u201d As <a href=\"http:\/\/news.wustl.edu\/news\/Pages\/20916.aspx\">one article<\/a> explains it, \u201cin murder mysteries, the detective usually diagnoses cyanide poisoning by the scent of bitter almonds wafting from the corpse.\u201d In its pure form, cyanide apparently does have an almond-like scent\u2014and this makes sense, since the toxin is found in the wild form of the nut.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But how do we know what it <em><span style=\"font-family: Times;\">tastes<\/span><\/em> like? The problem with lethal doses of poison is, there aren\u2019t a lot of tasters\u2019 notes. And as any child who&#8217;s regretted sipping vanilla extract knows all too well, smell can be deceiving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a rather macabre twist, an Indian man answered the question when he took his own life in 2006. In a suicide note, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/news\/world\/suicide-note-reveals-taste-of-cyanide\/2006\/07\/08\/1152240534587.html\">he wrote<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cDoctors, potassium cyanide. I have tasted it. It burns the tongue and tastes acrid.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The doctor who conducted the autopsy declared this was the first document attesting to the taste of the fast-acting poison, which the man had mixed with whiskey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThat parrot,\u201d he said at last. \u201cYou know something?
