Trollope\u2019s people are all doing things that are small: getting on committees, making sermons, writing to newspapers, finding misplaced checks.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>More than that: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/books\/11440152\/How-turning-to-Trollope-saved-my-life.html\" target=\"_blank\">Trollope has saved lives<\/a>. <em>Lives<\/em>. \u201cTo this day [I] credit him with saving me from a nervous breakdown. Reading English at university I\u2019d forgotten what it was to read for pleasure \u2026 When I stumbled upon his work, I was looking for a way to understand the world, particularly 1980s London. The ideals\u2014some might say delusions\u2014of the counterculture were being replaced by an enthusiasm for money, efficiency and snobbery, especially among my generation. The people and problems Trollope described seemed then, as now, astonishingly contemporary.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Sarker Protick\u2019s series of photographs, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/behold\/2015\/04\/27\/sarker_protick_photographs_the_bangladeshi_film_industry_in_his_series_love.html\" target=\"_blank\">Love Me or Kill Me<\/a>,\u201d captures film sets at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation, where the movies are \u201cexercises in extremes, made quickly and with small budgets to appeal to the widest possible audience.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhpbooks.com\/three-for-tuesday-an-interview-with-tim-parks\/\" target=\"_blank\">An interview with Tim Parks<\/a> on reading, translating, and difficult writers: \u201cAn American author actually doesn\u2019t have to think about anything. He can just write and think for years for Americans\u2014and in fact, everybody\u2019s becoming Americans \u2026 But if you\u2019re in Holland, Norway, Sweden, even Italy, to a degree, then apart from the fact that you\u2019ve grown up with the idea that lots of books came from other places and so there\u2019s no reason my book shouldn\u2019t go to other places\u2014and apart from the fact that the number of people buying books in your country is much smaller\u2014your chances of surviving on a book that\u2019s totally in Italy is very small. There\u2019s just a tendency to look outward more.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Write a House, the extra-extra-extended residency program in which writers are awarded a house, forever, in Detroit, is accepting its next round of applicants. <a href=\"http:\/\/writeahouse.com\/adviceforapplicants\/\" target=\"_blank\">An inside tip from the last winner<\/a>: \u201cIf you\u2019re considering applying and you\u2019re thinking to yourself, \u2018I want to, but it\u2019s in Detroit\u2019\u2014don\u2019t apply. If you don\u2019t want to live in Detroit, or Detroit\u2019s reputation scares you, don\u2019t apply to win a house in Detroit. It\u2019s pretty simple.
