Abrams, whose Norton Anthologies have united the bookshelves of English majors across time and space, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/apr\/23\/mh-abrams-norton-anthology-founder-influential-critic-dead-at-age-102\">is dead at 102<\/a>. His seminal work, <em>The Mirror and the Lamp <\/em>(1953), was that rare thing, a work of criticism that permeated the culture and changed the way we read; it resuscitated the reputation of the British Romantics and launched a new school of thought. \u201cThe first test any poem must pass,\u201d Abrams wrote, \u201cis no longer, \u2018is it true to nature?\u2019 but a criterion looking in a different direction; namely, \u2018Is it sincere? Is it genuine?\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>Maureen Freely, Orhan Pamuk\u2019s longtime English translator, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2015\/apr\/23\/translating-pamuk-seeing-istanbul-again\/\">has come to see Istanbul through his eyes<\/a>: \u201cThe Istanbul of my own childhood had vanished. But today his sonnets on World War I make him look like a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/the-true-story-of-rupert-brooke\">posh idiot nationalist<\/a>\u201d: \u201cAs with the work of many writers whose worlds have so thoroughly vanished and whose lives have sunk into myth, it can be hard to grasp the humor and the lightness in Brooke\u2019s writing.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/204313\/words-music-perhaps\">Philip Glass has written a memoir<\/a>.
