Perhaps an exhaustion with national myths explains the recent advent of post-apocalyptic literature \u2026 When the dream has been blown to bits for more than a century, all that\u2019s left is to tell bleak stories of human survival set in the wreckage of a junkyard.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in blunt, clear-eyed statistics: one in six writers did not earn any money from their writing in 2013, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-32379991\" target=\"_blank\">a new report from The Authors\u2019 Licensing and Collecting Society said<\/a>, \u201cthough 98 percent saying their work had been published or used in other ways. 11.5 percent of authors now earn a living solely from their writing\u2014down from 40 percent a decade ago.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Norway has announced that it will cease FM radio broadcasts in 2017, and others are expected to follow suit\u2014meaning <a href=\"If%20we're%20being%20realistic,%20it's%20no%20surprise%20that%20radio%20is%20in%20the%20early%20stages%20of%20consolidating%20and%20converting%20to%20digital%20transmission.\" target=\"_blank\">the age of analog may be drawing to a close<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Critics, Saul Bellow felt, \u201cought to provide useful encouragement and then get the hell out of the way. This \u2026 helps to explain the lifelong tension between Bellow and Lionel Trilling, the leading critic of his time \u2026 Bellow greet[ed] Trilling at a party: \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/jewishreviewofbooks.com\/articles\/1599\/live-wire\/\" target=\"_blank\">Still peddling the same old horseshit, Lionel<\/a>?\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI feel about so-called intellectuals, especially academics\u2014English professors in particular\u2014almost the same way I once felt about my rural townsfolk: that <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/How-I-Got-Weird\/229485?cid=megamenu\" target=\"_blank\">I can\u2019t get far enough away<\/a>.
