You must enter a state where you come to understand meaning-resistant arrangements of language as having their own kind of meaning. It\u2019s quite similar to those Magic Eye posters from the nineties: If you haven\u2019t figured out how to look at them, you can\u2019t believe that anyone really sees the dolphin.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In late eighteenth-century London, <em>Harris\u2019s List of Covent Garden Ladies<\/em> served as a kind of vade mecum for the seasoned brothel-goer, endeavoring to list \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/eighteenth-century-guide-to-prostitutes-or-soft-core-erotic-fiction?mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">the most celebrated ladies now on the town<\/a>.\u201d It was so salacious that its creators eventually wound up in jail. A sample listing for one Mrs. Banner speaks of her \u201cirresistible eye\u201d; her \u201cfavourite spot below\u201d apparently \u201ccalls for the Priapian weapon,\u201d eager \u201cto receive it in her sheath at its most powerful thrust up to the hilt.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the early twentieth century, Le Corbusier concocted Maison Dom-Ino, a blueprint for standardized housing with all the hallmarks of modernism: he envisioned a skeletal structure of concrete slabs. His idea was never realized, but decades later, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/04\/radical-le-corbusier-design-shaped-italy\/?mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Italian architects borrowed liberally from his designs<\/a>, and now Maison Dom-Ino rip-offs freckle the countryside: \u201cIt\u2019s a design innovation that\u2019s been turned into something, especially in Italy, that is regarded as something completely the opposite. It\u2019s a form of architectural blasphemy. It became synonymous with an eyesore, and a dilapidated landscape.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nerve.com\/life\/frank-stanford-poetry-magic-death\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Stanford\u2019s new collected poems<\/a>, <em>What About This<\/em>: \u201cMore than anything, like Basho, like Li Po, like Emily Dickinson and Yeats, Stanford was a poet of the moon. The moon cycles through nearly every of his poems. And it\u2019s never the same moon sliver. The moon gravitates as a\u00a0 \u2018beautiful white spider,\u2019 \u2018a dead man floating down the river,\u2019 \u2018a woman in a red dress \/ standing on the beach.\u2019 It\u2019s \u2018a plate with no supper,\u2019 \u2018a clock with twelve numbers,\u2019 it\u2019s \u2018swollen up \/ like a mosquito\u2019s belly\u2019 \u2026 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Readings from Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, Gwendolyn Brooks, Audre Lorde, and Czes\u0142aw Mi\u0142osz are among the new recordings released by the Library of Congress, which has finally digitized some seventy-five years of magnetic-tape reels.
