Oh, and his substance.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s counterintuitive to think of the British Museum as a happening spot, but for a long time <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookforum.com\/inprint\/022_01\/14388\" target=\"_blank\">its reading room served as a premier gathering place for London\u2019s brainy bohemians<\/a> \u2026 It was also a pickup scene. Edward Aveling, a science lecturer, playwright, and political activist\u2014and a notorious flirt\u2014described the reading room as \u2018in equal degrees a menagerie and a lunatic asylum\u2019 and made a tongue-in-cheek proposal that it be segregated by sex so as to bring about \u2018less talking and fewer marriages.\u2019 \u201d (If you\u2019re getting any ideas\u2014don\u2019t. The reading room has since closed.)<\/li>\n<li>As an adult, Derrida transformed English and humanities departments around the world; as a student, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2015\/04\/derridas-college-admission-essay-on-shakespeare-quite-incomprehensible-1951.html\" target=\"_blank\">he had struggles of his own<\/a>. When he was twenty, he submitted a paper on Shakespeare that earned him a failing grade, along with such (arguably prophetic) remarks as \u201cquite unintelligible\u201d and \u201ctotally incomprehensible\u201d: \u201cIn this essay,\u201d the instructor wrote, \u201cyou seem to be constantly on the verge of something interesting but, somewhat, you always fail to explain it clearly.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/flavorwire.com\/513611\/flavorwire-exclusive-charles-dickens-nightwalks-through-paris-and-london?hootPostID=dcd31df72c20c9349bfa48ddd1e35cf2\" target=\"_blank\">Dickens\u2019s nighttime constitutionals<\/a> gave him a chance to \u201csee through the shining riddle of the street,\u201d as G. K. Chesterton put it\u2014but they also granted him a chance for emotional escape. \u201cIt seems as if they supplied something to my brain,\u201d Dickens wrote, \u201cwhich it cannot bear, when busy, to lose.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>This month marks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2015\/04\/portraits-of-human-nature-anthony-trollope-at-200.html\" target=\"_blank\">Trollope\u2019s bicentennial<\/a>, and though his renown is taken more or less for granted today, it wasn\u2019t always so: Tolstoy found \u201ctoo much that is conventional\u201d in his work, and Henry James called him \u201cmechanical.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in teens: they\u2019re still out there, they are legion, they are wild, oppressed, they are everything you fear and want to be. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/teen-culture-is-the-culture-of-oppression-and-it-is-the-1696692145\" target=\"_blank\">Teens are the only true nihilists left<\/a>. Teens can use guns and have sex but their brains aren\u2019t even fully formed. This is an amazing fact \u2026 Teens only care about the immediate culture. They are not stuck in dead-time nostalgia. They have never heard of Missy Elliot. They do not care. That is OK.
