Detrimental to one\u2019s creative impulses? \u201cIt\u2019s no surprise that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/04\/12\/education\/edlife\/12edl-12mfa.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">the promise of the M.F.A.<\/a>\u2014to make you, if you\u2019re lucky, a famous, well-paid author\u2014strikes so many people with even the smallest literary dream as utterly irresistible.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>To master the subtleties of another language is no mean feat\u2014and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2015\/04\/prepositions?fsrc=scn\/tw_ec\/deal_with_it\" target=\"_blank\">getting prepositions right<\/a> is often the most frustrating part. They can seem entirely arbitrary: \u201cSpaniards dream <em>with<\/em> (not <em>about<\/em>) something. In the unlikely event that Germans schedule something at an approximate time, it is\u00a0<em>gegen<\/em> (<em>against<\/em>) seven o\u2019clock, not\u00a0<em>about\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>around<\/em>. The ancient Greeks, progenitors of western logic, had many prepositions that do bizarre double duty to the English eye:\u00a0<em>meta <\/em>means both\u00a0<em>with<\/em> and <em>after<\/em>; <em>kata <\/em>means both <em>according to <\/em>and <em>against<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Lydia Davis, meanwhile, has faced struggles of her own <a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/lydia-davis-at-the-end-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">in learning Norwegian<\/a>: \u201cYou see how you are suddenly able to unlock so many words, just by studying the pattern? Take the words beginning with \u2018Hv.\u2019 I guessed they were used in questions: \u2018hva\u2019 meaning \u2018what\u2019, \u2018hvorfor\u2019 meaning \u2018why\u2019. But it took me a long time to figure out \u2018hvis\u2019 was \u2018if.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>Then there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/what-part-of-no-totally-dont-you-understand\" target=\"_blank\">contranyms, auto-antonyms, antagonyms, Janus words, and\/or antiologies<\/a>\u2014words that can function as their own opposites. Take <em>no<\/em>, for instance, which increasingly means <em>yes<\/em>. (Only, mind you, in certain situations.)<\/li>\n<li>Dan McPharlin makes art \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/beautifuldecay.com\/2015\/04\/08\/dan-mcpharlins-sci-fi-illustrations-past-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\">derived from blueprints laid down decades earlier<\/a> on the pages of battered sci-fi paperbacks, fantasy art books, and mid-century design quarterlies.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2015\/04\/05\/how-to-navigate-the-art-world.html\" target=\"_blank\">mind-numbing chatter<\/a>\u201d of the art world: \u201cThere is a debate about whether or not something \u2018posits something about its ability to posit something.\u2019 One critic tells a student, \u2018You have to make better paintings fail.\u2019 One exchange between student and critic involves the critic demanding, \u2018What does that paint can stand for, in that painting?\u2019 When the student doesn\u2019t reply, the critic continues, \u2018Stop squirming! Is there a political implication to this paint can or not?\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Writers love to hate\u00a0M.F.A.s; they also love to brag about them.
