It was one o\u2019clock in the afternoon and he said, \u2018Come on, let\u2019s get a Tequila Sunrise\u2019\u2014you know, it\u2019s 1974\u2014or a Harvey Wallbanger or something. He said, \u2018Yeah, I got the book, I read it, you know, it wasn\u2019t like a good book or anything.\u2019 I said, \u2018Oh \u2026 \u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/apr\/05\/critic-james-wood-religious-view-of-fiction\" target=\"_blank\">James Wood, literary evangelical<\/a>, defends books as a religion: \u201cBy fixing on humdrum domestic details, novels, [Wood] says, redeem life and rescue it from its sad ephemerality; a book is not solitary, like the person who reads it, but dispenses \u2018proximity, fellow-feeling, compassion, communion \u2026 I am taking a religious view of a form that\u2019s very earthly, and there\u2019s some tension between my approach and that worldliness.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>Punk music has thrived in plenty of unlikely places, but <a href=\"http:\/\/noisey.vice.com\/blog\/siberian-punk-scene-in-the-1980s?utm_source=noiseytwitterus\" target=\"_blank\">Siberia embraced its ethos as nowhere else could<\/a>, providing \u201cthe perfect incubator for nurturing the creative malice punk requires \u2026 Lacking any official rock clubs in Siberia, punks colonized cafeterias, apartments, libraries and local \u2018Houses of Culture\u2019\u2014the Soviet equivalent to VFW halls. Dorm rooms hosted entire rock festivals.\u201d (But the bands couldn\u2019t put on the punk uniform: \u201cIn Siberia, if you looked like that on the street, you wouldn\u2019t be able to walk more than 100 meters. After that, someone would just take you around the corner and beat the shit out of you.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIn a photograph, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/gallery\/2015\/apr\/03\/kracauer-mind-photo\/\" target=\"_blank\">a person\u2019s history is buried as if under a layer of snow<\/a>,\u201d Siegfried Kracauer, \u201cthe Frankfurt School\u2019s freelance intellectual par excellence,\u201d once wrote. A new book of his family snapshots captures his \u201cdesire to reproduce reality at its most transient.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Umberto Eco\u2019s <em>How to Write a Thesis<\/em>, first published in 1977, has at last arrived in English. It\u2019s about \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/a-guide-to-thesis-writing-that-is-a-guide-to-life\" target=\"_blank\">what the thesis represents<\/a>: a magical process of self-realization, a kind of careful, curious engagement with the world that need not end in one\u2019s early twenties.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Price talks to David Simon about crime, television, crime on television, and his father as a less-than-ideal reader: \u201cI ran into him about three months after [my first novel] came out.
