All I require, to use a culinary term, is an <em>amuse-bouche<\/em> that leaves a pleasant aftertaste. Have you ever tried poetry, buster? The reader may be wondering. As a snooze-inducer, nothing comes close. Thanks to it, millions have slept like newborn babies over the centuries.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Hanging around at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/barbara-pym-and-the-new-spinster?intcid=mod-latest\" target=\"_blank\">the Barbara Pym Society\u2019s annual North American conference<\/a>: \u201cTom Sopko, the conference organizer, read aloud quotations from her novels and, table by table, we guessed the character they related to \u2026 The rest of the weekend was spent alternating talks about this year\u2019s featured book \u2026 with suitably Pym-ish activities: a sherry party, a dramatized reading, and Evensong back at the Church of the Advent.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A new history of the gym sees it as a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/the-temple-of-perfection-a-history-of-the-gym-by-eric-chaline-1.2156021\" target=\"_blank\">quasi-religious space<\/a>,\u201d as it\u2019s been since Ancient Greece: \u201cFreeborn male citizens would go there to train their bodies in the pursuit of <em>arete<\/em>\u2014moral, physical and intellectual excellence. At the gym they would also enjoy same-sex erotic relationships, the beginning of a symbiosis between homosexuality and the gymnasium that continues to the present day.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Salman Rushdie got a Goodreads account\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/people\/sir-salman-rushdie-claims-i-was-just-fooling-around-as-his-ratings-of-other-authors-work-go-viral-10156390.html\" target=\"_blank\">and promptly began to assign unflattering ratings to novels by his peers<\/a>. <em>Money<\/em>? Three stars. <em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>? Three stars. <em>Lucky Jim<\/em>?
