At any rate we laughed when we told the stories. Once I had left a pair of gloves on the bus and he slapped me in the face when he found out. I had leaned against the wobbly table in the hall and sent it flying and he came over and hit me. It was absolutely absurd!\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/after-the-party\" target=\"_blank\">A new excerpt from the long-awaited fourth volume<\/a> of Knausgaard\u2019s <em>My Struggle<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>A strain of occultism runs through Yeats\u2019s poetry\u2014\u201cdo-it-yourself religion,\u201d as Seamus Heaney called it\u2014and sure enough, \u201cas a young man, according to the scholar Kathleen Raine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2015\/mar\/26\/tarot-dreams\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yeats had a pack of Tarot cards<\/a> among his \u2018few and treasured possessions.\u2019 In London, in 1887, he was initiated into the Hermetic Society of the Golden Dawn, one of those secret societies that tend, as Raine remarks, \u2018to relate everything with everything\u2014letters with numbers, with cycles of months, years, and the signs of the zodiac, with parts of the body, celestial and infernal hierarchies of angels, with minerals, metals, plants, and animals.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On Obadiah Slope, the \u201ccalculating curate\u201d at the center of Trollope\u2019s <em>Barchester Towers<\/em>: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/mar\/31\/baddies-in-books-obadiah-slope-anthony-trollope\" target=\"_blank\">Isn\u2019t Slope just a man seeking a better job and, into the bargain, a wife with a comfortable income<\/a>? What exactly does he do, and why is he so disturbing? Ruthlessly fawning, constantly trying to wriggle his way into favor with the rich and powerful, and in the process tread on the heads of others, Slope is a particularly poisonous example of the kind of creep that haunts almost any organization or social group.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Reports by the World Bank are torturing the English language like never before\u2014these \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/newleftreview.org\/II\/92\/franco-moretti-dominique-pestre-bankspeak\" target=\"_blank\">grammatico-political monstrosities<\/a>\u201d amount to a new form of expression, \u201cBankspeak.\u201d \u201cIn the world of \u2018management\u2019, <em>people<\/em> have <em>goals <\/em>and <em>agendas<\/em>; faced with <em>opportunities<\/em>,<em> challenges<\/em> and <em>critical<\/em> situations, they elaborate <em>strategies<\/em>.
