Samuel Luke Fildes, <i>The Empty Chair<\/i>, 1870.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>What accounts for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-secret-of-the-jane-austen-industry-1427473889\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Austen\u2019s unprecedented posthumous success<\/a>? \u201cTolstoy, Dickens and Proust are all remembered, and still read, but they do not have countless fans throughout the world who reread their books each year, who eagerly await the latest television or movie adaptation, who attend conventions in period costume, and who no doubt dream about the heroes and heroines of their novels.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today, in the furniture of the greats: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/mar\/29\/charles-dickens-desk-and-chair-saved-for-the-nation\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Dickens\u2019s desk (and chair) have been preserved for posterity<\/a>. Having been \u201chidden away\u201d for a hundred and fifty years, during which many people who were not Charles Dickens had the audacity to use them, they\u2019ll soon assume their rightful place at London\u2019s Dickens Museum, where they\u2019ve been \u201csecured for the benefit of all our visitors.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/29\/magazine\/galaxies-inside-his-head-poet-terrance-hayes.html?smid=tw-nytmag\" target=\"_blank\">The many faces of Terrance Hayes<\/a>: \u201cWhen college students read Hayes, they talk about the underlying seriousness of poems about lynchings, fistfights or rape. But when poets talk about Hayes, they tend to address his invented forms: poems based on anagrams, on the Japanese slide shows called <em>pechakucha<\/em> and on puzzles.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Josephine Tey\u2019s <em>The Daughter of Time<\/em>, a 1951 mystery novel, renewed interest in Richard III, that most maligned of monarchs: \u201cThe novel was immediately popular when it first appeared \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/the-detective-novel-that-convinced-a-generation-richard-iii-wasnt-evil\" target=\"_blank\">Tey\u2019s dissection of received history prompted readers to question \u2026 everything they had been taught<\/a>. This could feel like an awakening.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Robert Moses is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/29\/nyregion\/robert-moses-french-comic-book-hero.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;smid=nytimesarts\" target=\"_blank\">the subject of a new graphic biography<\/a>\u2014from France. \u201cNo New Yorker would mistake the book for a native product. There are editing glitches. Randalls Island becomes \u2018Randall Island,\u2019 Staten Island is rendered \u2018State Island\u2019 \u2026 Lines of dialogue like \u2018You\u2019ll stay for the dinner I\u2019ve organized with some people from the municipality\u2019 were probably not uttered quite like that.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What accounts for Jane Austen\u2019s unprecedented
