You can feel the lines being drawn and the gloves going up \u2026\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCharacters having hallucinations and apparitions; super-strength robots throwing cars on a destructive rampage; jealous gorillas who are furious they didn\u2019t end up with the girl; a thieving woman stealing a piglet under the cover of nighttime; circus murder mysteries \u2026\u2009\u201d You\u2019ll find all these and more on <a href=\"http:\/\/beautifuldecay.com\/2015\/03\/25\/weird-wonderful-cover-art-mexican-paperbacks\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\">the pulpy covers of Mexican paperbacks.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_vault\/2015\/03\/25\/history_of_oratorical_education_sanders_school_speaker_nineteenth_century.html?wpsrc=fol_tw\" target=\"_blank\">A nineteenth-century guide to oratory<\/a> tells you everything you need to know about giving a good speech; it will generously expand your gestural vocabulary, if nothing else. (The key to public speaking is to flail around like you\u2019re an out-of-water synchronized swimmer, apparently.)<\/li>\n<li>You might also make liberal use of litotes\u2014the art of ironic understatement \u201cin which an affirmative is expressed by the negative of its contrary\u201d\u2014a not unsubtle addition to any rhetorician\u2019s arsenal. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/mind-your-language\/2015\/mar\/26\/litotes-the-most-common-rhetorical-device-youve-never-heard-of\" target=\"_blank\">Litotes is best appreciated as a kind of rhetorical magician or illusionist<\/a>. It can draw our attention to something\u2014its badness, its difficulty, etc.\u2014while, simultaneously, emphasizing its opposite. The quickness of the rhetorical hand deceives the mind\u2019s eye\u2014now you see what\u2019s being meant, now you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And steer clear of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2015\/03\/johnson-writing-style\" target=\"_blank\">zombie nouns<\/a>, while you\u2019re at it: \u201cJudith Butler, in the essay that won the 1997 Bad Writing Contest, uses <em>account<\/em>,<em> relations<\/em>,<em> ways<\/em>,<em> hegemony<\/em>,<em> relations<\/em>,<em> repetition<\/em>,<em> convergence<\/em>,<em> rearticulation<\/em>,<em> question<\/em>,<em> temporality<\/em>,<em> thinking<\/em>,<em> structure<\/em>,<em> shift<\/em>,<em> theory<\/em>,<em> totalities<\/em>,<em> objects<\/em>,<em> insights<\/em>,<em> possibility<\/em>,<em> structure<\/em>,<em> conception<\/em>,<em> hegemony<\/em>,<em> sites<\/em>,<em> strategies<\/em>,<em> rearticulation <\/em>and <em>power<\/em>\u2014all in a single sentence.
