Photo via <em>NYRB<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Ian Frazier on <em>Steaming to the North<\/em>, a new book of photographs that \u201cprovides another of the poignant rear-view-mirror visions of ourselves and our environment in which Americans specialize.\u201d The book charts the journey of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/gallery\/2015\/mar\/14\/alaska-new-eyes\/?insrc=wbll\" target=\"_blank\">the U.S. Revenue Cutter <em>Bear<\/em><\/a>, a 198-foot, reinforced-hull vessel powered by both steam and sail.\u201d The <em>Bear<\/em> patrolled the seas of Alaska circa 1886, when it was a new American territory. These photos of it were \u201crediscovered in the 1970s under a porch in New Hampshire.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Cicero may have been a master orator\u2014but no rhetoric could rescue <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/books\/9465912\/ancients-on-oldies-tips-on-ageing-from-the-romans-are-all-greek-to-richard-ingrams\/\" target=\"_blank\">his lame advice for how to spend your twilight years<\/a>. \u201cHe comes over as a humorless and self-satisfied bore when he writes that \u2018the fruit of old age is the remembering and amassing of fine accomplishments\u2019 \u2026 Besides being unduly platitudinous, it makes generally for unhappy reading \u2026 Apart from sitting on the sofa thinking smugly about all your great achievements, Cicero recommends taking up agriculture.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Last week we featured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/10\/crashedcrushed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ron Arad\u2019s crushed cars<\/a>. Now there\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wallpaper.com\/video\/art\/crushing-by-ron-arad\/2490776811001\" target=\"_blank\">a video that demonstrates how he crushes them<\/a>, exactly. (Spoiler: it involves force.)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Geoff Dyer on Raymond Williams, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/2015\/03\/raymond-williams-was-one-lefts-great-thinkers-he-deserves-be-rediscovered\" target=\"_blank\">a hero of the 1968 generation<\/a>\u201d: \u201cWilliams\u2019s legacy and influence, which had once seemed assured, have gradually shrunk \u2026 it is necessary to do two things that might appear contradictory: to concede that, with the exception of <em>Border Country<\/em>, the fiction to which he devoted so much energy was dull; and to free the rest of his work from the once-modish tundra of cultural studies, let alone the pack ice of theory. Perhaps then\u00a0he will be read with the same passion and adoration that still attends the discovery of John Berger.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On the intellectual character (or lack thereof) of conspiracy theorists: \u201cThe problem with conspiracy theorists is not, as the U.S. legal scholar Cass Sunstein argues, that they have little relevant information. The key to what they end up believing is how they <em>interpret<\/em> and <em>respond to<\/em> the vast quantities of relevant information at their disposal \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/aeon.co\/magazine\/philosophy\/intellectual-character-of-conspiracy-theorists\/\" target=\"_blank\">this is fundamentally a question of the way they
