Online, no confectionary disaster, no late-night slip of the icing tube, goes undetected or unmocked. It\u2019s all in good fun, and at the end of the day, presumably most of the desserts still taste okay. Part of the issue is that there\u2019s so much cake perfection in the world today. At any moment, Pinterest and Instagram are teeming with examples of whimsy and skill at which most of us can only marvel. Between the ludicrous and the ideal, what\u2019s left?\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Saint Patrick\u2019s Day, as any vintage cookbook will attest, provides a glut of green monsters: not just green cakes, but green eggs, green mac \u2018n\u2019 cheese, green potatoes. Let\u2019s say right out that the American embrace of Saint Patrick\u2019s Day has been \u2026 problematic. Early twentieth-century Americans\u2014who had no contact with Eire beyond, perhaps, immigrant domestics\u2014donned green and tossed around harps and shamrocks with gay abandon. In 1918\u2019s <em>A Thousand Ways to Please a Husband<\/em>, Bettina throws a \u201cShamrock Luncheon,\u201d and each guest, \u201cto show her enthusiasm for the charms of \u2018ould Ireland,\u2019 was wearing, somewhere upon her gown, a bit of green.\u201d This enthusiasm is further demonstrated with crocheted favor baskets, grapefruit cocktails, and shamrock cakes. Exclaims one friend, \u201c\u2009\u2018You might be Irish yourself, Bettina, you have such a feeling for green!\u2019\u2009\u201d (Presumably neither she, nor anyone else present, is.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_83737\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/woodycake.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83737\" class=\"wp-image-83737\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/woodycake.png\" alt=\"woodycake\" width=\"250\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/woodycake.png 434w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/woodycake-300x272.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-83737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kasey<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This \u201cfeeling for green\u201d has resulted in Cake Wrecks beyond number, which is part of what I find so appealing about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time2saveworkshops.com\/happy-st-patricks-day-2\/\">this blogger\u2019s approach<\/a> to the Saint Patrick\u2019s Day cake genre. Here is the rare cake that celebrates the essence of the holiday\u2014its history and lore as well as its festivity. She writes,\u00a0\u201cSt. Patrick, with his lifelike body and robes of butter-cream icing, raises his Twix staff emblazoned with the yummy cross of Christianity and drives the gummy snakes back into the sea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Sadie Stein is contributing editor of\u00a0<\/em>The Paris Review,\u00a0<em>and the\u00a0<\/em>Daily<em>\u2019s correspondent.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We live in the age of the Cake Wreck.
