The production is underwritten by a grant from \u201can actor and stage manager turned Episcopal monk who pledged last year to give away much of his $153 million Powerball jackpot\u201d to support the arts.<\/li>\n<li>Are you tired of suffering through novels rife with profanity and cussing? Try Clean Reader, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/booksblog\/2015\/mar\/16\/ebooks-app-clean-reader-replace-swearwords\" target=\"_blank\">the only e-reader that gives you the power to hide swear words<\/a>\u201d\u2014it\u2019ll change <em>bastard<\/em> to <em>jerk<\/em>, <em>damn <\/em>to <em>darn<\/em>, and presumably render most David Mamet plays unreadable. And here\u2019s a winning slice of the Clean Reader philosophy: \u201cWill some authors be offended that some of their consumers use Clean Reader to pick out most of the profanity in their books? Perhaps. Should the reader feel bad about it? Nope. They\u2019ve paid good money for the book, they can consume it how they want.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>For the literary critic F. R. Leavis\u2014who was, by the time of his death in 1978, totally out of fashion\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/articles\/one-unsparing-eye_884473.html?nopager=1\" target=\"_blank\">great books were judgments about life<\/a>, and \u201cwhen a great novel or poem is used to support some generalization about culture, the qualities which make it worth reading tend to be ignored.\u201d Leavis abstained, dogmatically, from the pleasures of pop: \u201cLeavis declined \u2018intellectual slumming\u2019 of any sort. If he got winded, he put Schubert on the gramophone or read a neglected classic.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>How <a href=\"http:\/\/nautil.us\/issue\/22\/slow\/how-music-hijacks-our-perception-of-time-rp\" target=\"_blank\">music hijacks our sense of time<\/a>: \u201cIn 2004, the Royal Automobile Club Foundation for Motoring deemed Wagner\u2019s <em>Ride of the Valkyrie<\/em> the most dangerous music to listen to while driving. It is not so much the distraction, but the substitution of the frenzied tempo of the music that challenges drivers\u2019 normal sense of speed\u2014and the objective cue of the speedometer\u2014and causes them to speed.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/brief-thoughts-on-arrogance\" target=\"_blank\">getting a start as a critic<\/a>: \u201cI drew on a quality\u2014a resource, a tool\u2014that is very dear to me, and, I\u2019d venture to say, very dear to most people who write reviews: arrogance \u2026 There\u2019s good arrogance, too, just like there\u2019s good cholesterol: arrogance that bolsters you, that allows you to feel that your judgment might be sound, that it might\u2014and this is when the reviewer\u2019s mind starts warming up, starts humming\u2014be even better than sound.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chicago\u2019s Goodman Theater is mounting a five-hour adaptation of Bola\u00f1o\u2019s 2666.
