Imagine you are Karl Ove Knausgaard at this point in his career \u2026 Why not enjoy success? Why not accept that you are a genius, if people insistently tell you that you are? One way or another, from this point on it will be hard to achieve the same concentration, the same <em>innocence<\/em>, when you return to the empty page and the next stage in a life story that is now radically transformed.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in dubious superlatives: Was 1925 really \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/booksblog\/2015\/mar\/11\/was-1925-really-the-best-year-for-literature\" target=\"_blank\">the greatest year<\/a>\u201d in the history of literature? The BBC has declared it so. They searched \u201cfor a cluster of landmark books\u201d and then asked if said books \u201ccontinue to enthrall readers and explore our human dilemmas and joys in memorable ways\u201d; 1925, with its Hemingway and its Fitzgerald and its Dos Passos and its Dreiser, came away the victor. But make no mistake: seeking the greatest year in literature is a fool\u2019s errand, just as searching for the greatest minute in history would be.<\/li>\n<li>Sam Simon, who died this month, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/121282\/how-tension-between-sam-simon-and-matt-groening-built-simpsons?utm_content=buffer3fd9a&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">is responsible for much of the greatness of golden-age <em>Simpsons <\/em>episodes<\/a>, though his collaborations with Matt Groening weren\u2019t always smooth: \u201cIt was Simon\u2019s insight that animation allowed <em>The Simpsons<\/em> to sprawl across a vast canvas, illustrating new locations and inventing characters through the multifold voice talents of the cast. The Springfield the Simpsons inhabit is a mini-world on to itself, with its own rich mythology and history.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The science behind \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/the_good_word\/2015\/03\/wordnesia_that_strange_phenomenon_of_blanking_on_the_spelling_or_meaning.single.html\" target=\"_blank\">wordnesia<\/a>,\u201d a \u201ccommon brain glitch\u201d in which you can\u2019t spell the simplest words and common language has a sheen of unfamiliarity to it: \u201cRussell Epstein, a cognitive neuroscientist and psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania \u2026 posits that these experiences may be linked to concepts described by psychologist William James \u2026 [who] contended that our conscious experiences are made up of components he referred to as the nucleus and the fringe.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/newramblerreview.com\/book-reviews\/the-arts\/essays-and-reviews-1959-2003?utm_content=bufferf3e14&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">the criticism of Bernard Williams<\/a>: \u201cWilliams says that philosophers have typically been motivated by two things: curiosity, and the desire to be helpful.\u00a0 He unhesitatingly gives priority to the former motive \u2026 Above all, philosophy offers reflective analysis of our concepts, and, through these and a study of their history, insight into who \u2018we\u2019 are.\u00a0 If philosophy is to contribute anything distinctive, however, all this must be carried out with clarity and rigor, and the aim of \u2018getting it right\u2019 must \u2018be in place.\u2019&thinsp;\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/2015\/03\/cut-books-wildenboer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barbara Wildenboer\u2019s sculptures<\/a> meld the sprawl of a nervous system to the spines of books.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cCan a writer\u2019s original inspiration survive success?
