S. of A., which would\u2019ve been fine, had he not been such a lush. The State Department circulated a memo called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2015\/02\/guidelines-for-handling-william-faulkners-drinking.html\" target=\"_blank\">Guidelines for Handling Mr. William Faulkner on His Trips Abroad<\/a>,\u201d designed to help agents curb Faulkner\u2019s drinking. Their advice ranged from the obvious (monitor his liquor cabinet) to the subtle: \u201cKeep several pretty young girls in the front two rows of any public appearance to keep his attention up.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Twenty-five years late, a novelist has at last completed and delivered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/books\/2015\/03\/tess_of_the_d_urbervilles_is_shame_necessary_and_shame_in_my_academic_life.html?wpsrc=sh_all_dt_tw_ru\" target=\"_blank\">her tenth-grade term paper on <em>Tess of the D\u2019Urbervilles<\/em><\/a>. Her (perhaps convenient) conclusion: it\u2019s about shame. \u201cLike Tess, I spent a lot of time waiting to be found out: I worried that my adolescent failures would be exposed and that people would lose respect for me. Or love me less \u2026 Shame depends on an audience, and those who are ashamed become overly self-conscious. I\u2019m aware, even now, of compensating for past mistakes.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Why are there so many more aspiring writers than aspiring readers? \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guernicamag.com\/interviews\/the-art-of-agenting\/?src=longreads&amp;utm_content=buffer7154c&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">I try to take a philosophical, and I hope empathetic, view of it all<\/a>. I mean, we\u2019re all going to die, and we have a short time here on earth, and we all want to achieve distinction of some sort while we\u2019re here. Meanwhile, we all have Microsoft Word installed on our desktops. We all already spend a lot of time typing. One way to leave one\u2019s mark would be to, say, write a great symphony, but most people don\u2019t know how to read music. Whereas more or less everyone does have the means to put down words on a page and save them and share them. That\u2019s a great thing\u2014I\u2019m all for technology eliminating barriers to communication and expression\u2014but it can lead to delusions. Just because you\u2019ve written it doesn\u2019t make it worth reading. And it\u2019s depressing when people forget that you can\u2019t be a good writer without first being a good reader.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Paul Beatty has an enviable gift: he \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/03\/books\/paul-beatty-author-of-the-sellout-on-finding-humor-in-issues-of-race.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;smid=nytimesarts&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">can turn a sacred cow into hamburger with just one sentence<\/a>.\u201d His new novel <em>The Sellout <\/em>takes on race in America, sparing \u201cno person or piety\u201d: \u201cThe only tangible benefit to come out of the civil rights movement,\u201d he writes, \u201cis that black people aren\u2019t as afraid of dogs as they used to be.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Ren\u00e9 Magritte, comedian: \u201cIt\u2019s noticeable that many of the techniques Magritte uses for creating his mysterious images <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2015\/feb\/23\/rene-magritte-like-standup-comedian-charlie-skelton\" target=\"_blank\">are to be found in comedy writing<\/a>.
