They\u2019re part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/art-photography\/6364\/sample-trees-ben-lerner\">a portfolio by Thomas Demand<\/a>, accompanied by poems from Ben Lerner.<\/p>\n<p>We also have the first-ever in-person interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6370\/art-of-fiction-no-228-elena-ferrante\">Elena Ferrante, on the art of fiction<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As a girl\u2014twelve, thirteen years old\u2014I was absolutely certain that a good book had to have a man as its hero, and that depressed me \u2026 At fifteen I began to write stories about brave girls who were in serious trouble. But the idea remained\u2014indeed, it grew stronger\u2014that the greatest narrators were men and that one had to learn to narrate like them \u2026 Even when I wrote stories about girls, I wanted to give the heroine a wealth of experiences, a freedom, a determination that I tried to imitate from the great novels written by men.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And Lydia Davis,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6366\/art-of-fiction-no-227-lydia-davis\">on her approach to the short story, to translation, and to naming<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019ve always felt that naming was artificial. I\u2019ve done it. I wrote about one woman and called her Mrs. Orlando, because the woman I based her on lived in Florida. Recently I wrote a story called \u201cThe Two Davises and the Rug\u201d because I have a neighbor named Davis and he and I were trying to decide which one should end up with a certain rug, and I was very fond of using that name, even though it wouldn\u2019t make much difference to anybody if I called it \u201cThe Two Harrises and the Rug.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Plus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6360\/art-of-fiction-no-226-hilary-mantel\">Hilary Mantel discusses her Cromwell books<\/a> and the difference between historians and novelists:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Nobody seems to share my approach to historical fiction. I suppose if I have a maxim, it is that there isn\u2019t any necessary conflict between good history and good drama. I know that history is not shapely, and I know the truth is often inconvenient and incoherent. It contains all sorts of superfluities. You could cut a much better shape if you were God, but as it is, I think the whole fascination and the skill is in working <em>with <\/em>those incoherencies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s new fiction by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6372\/lelah-angela-flournoy\">Angela Flournoy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6368\/mercury-ken-kalfus\">Ken Kalfus<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6358\/gone-with-the-mind-mark-leyner\">Mark Leyner<\/a>, the winner of this year\u2019s Terry Southern Prize; a novella by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6362\/feathered-glory-james-lasdun\">James Lasdun<\/a>; and poems from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6359\/three-poems-charles-simic\">Charles Simic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6361\/three-poems-peter-gizzi\">Peter Gizzi<\/a>, Major Jackson, Stephen Dunn, Susan Stewart, Shuzo Takiguchi, Craig Morgan Teicher, and Sarah Trudgeon.<\/p>\n<p>Mel Bochner, who designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/back-issues\/56\">a cover for the magazine back in 1973<\/a>, is back with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/art-photography\/6374\/thesaurus-paintings-mel-bochner\">a portfolio of thesaurus paintings<\/a>. And last, there\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/6375\/letter-from-the-primal-horde-j-d-daniels\">Letter from the Primal Horde<\/a>,\u201d an essay by J. D.
