Many congratulations to our Southern editor, John Jeremiah Sullivan<\/strong>, for winning one of this year\u2019s Windham Campbell Prizes<\/a>. The citation calls him \u201can essayist of astonishing range \u2026 empathetic and bracingly intelligent.\u201d We heartily agree.<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t heard of the Windham Campbell Prizes, that\u2019s because this is only the third year they\u2019ve been awarded\u2014 Donald Windham and Sandy M. Campbell founded the prize in 2013 \u201cto call attention to literary achievement and provide writers with the opportunity to focus on their work independent of financial concerns.\u201d Awards are given for fiction, nonfiction, and drama, to those who write in English anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn’t overstate how encouraging this award is,\u201d Sullivan wrote, \u201cor how practically helpful. In this phase of my writing life I feel a desperate need to stay down over the research I’m doing, not look up, and the prize makes that possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also among this year\u2019s nine winners is Geoff Dyer<\/strong>, whose work has previously appeared<\/a> in The Paris Review<\/em>. We applaud him, too, along with all of this year\u2019s prizewinners<\/a>.
