There is something <em>delicious<\/em>\u2014that\u2019s the only word I can use to describe it\u2014about recreating apprehension on the page.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Jennifer Lopez\u2019s terrible new movie <em>The Boy Next Door<\/em> has inspired <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abebooks.com\/blog\/index.php\/2015\/02\/18\/its-jenny-on-the-book-j-lo-inspires-hunt-for-first-editions-of-homers-iliad\/\">a misguided quest for first editions of the<em> Iliad<\/em><\/a>. \u201cLopez plays a divorced English literature high school teacher who has a one-night stand with her younger neighbor played by Ryan Guzman. In one scene, Guzman\u2019s character gives Lopez a copy of <em>The Iliad<\/em>, which is described as a \u2018first edition\u2019 and apparently found for \u2018a buck at a garage sale.\u2019\u2009\u201d Problems: no one knows for certain when the <em>Iliad<\/em> was even written. It was passed down by oral tradition first. It\u2019s at least three thousand years old. It wasn\u2019t composed in English for first publication in a handsome hardcover.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/andre-brink-traitor-tribe?intcid=mod-latest\">On Andr\u00e9 Brink<\/a>, a South African novelist who died last week: \u201cBrink could write in a blocky, slightly cumbersome way, and some of his overlong later novels needed more editing. But the combination of his moral vision, psychological acuity, and insistent narrative force puts him, in my mind at least, in the company of Theodore Dreiser and Russell Banks.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m not sure if Victoria Sambunaris\u2019s pictures amount to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/behold\/2015\/02\/18\/victoria_sambunaris_taxonomy_of_a_landscape_is_a_collection_of_images_taken.html\">a photographer\u2019s version of the Great American Novel<\/a>,\u201d as the headline says they do\u2014but they\u2019re an affecting record of an American phenomenon: \u201cthe recurring sprawl of massive development and junctures where nature meets culture unexpectedly and surprisingly sublimely.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Supposedly, we\u2019ve entered a new golden age for television, and for architecture, and some might say even journalism\u2014what about art? \u201cThis is how we know precisely that <a href=\"http:\/\/observer.com\/2015\/02\/the-art-worlds-60-year-rut-could-a-new-golden-age-be-on-the-horizon\/\">we\u2019re not in any Golden Age for visual\u00a0art<\/a>: There\u2019s the spectacle of obsessive, laser-like bidding on lonely, singular canvasses by the few, but no broadly shared delight and conversation. \u2018Excess of excellence\u2019 or \u2018intellectual credibility\u2019 wouldn\u2019t exactly be the first words from anyone in\u00a0Contemporary\u00a0art\u00a0describing their own field, much less Miami art fairs.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feeling anxious?
