{"id":82747,"date":"2015-02-16T09:29:32","date_gmt":"2015-02-16T14:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=82747"},"modified":"2015-02-16T11:20:49","modified_gmt":"2015-02-16T16:20:49","slug":"greetings-from-kingston-pen-and-other-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2015\/02\/16\/greetings-from-kingston-pen-and-other-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Greetings from Kingston Pen, and Other News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_82748\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kingston.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82748\" class=\"wp-image-82748\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kingston.jpg\" alt=\"kingston\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kingston.jpg 1065w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kingston-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kingston-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-82748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Geoffrey James, via <em>Slate<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The Book of Mormon may be a dull, plodding testament to the assorted lunacies of America\u2019s Second Great Awakening\u2014but it\u2019s also \u201ca Great American Novel, or, failing that, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/search-great-american-bible?mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">a priceless artifact from the Old, Weird America<\/a>\u2014a uniquely American product, like jazz music and superhero comics, that deserves our attention.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>What role, if any, <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Whats-Wrong-With-Public\/189921\/\" target=\"_blank\">does the \u201cpublic intellectual\u201d have in 2015<\/a>? \u201cIt might be to participate in making \u2018the public\u2019 more brilliant, more skeptical, more disobedient, more capable of self-defense, and more dangerous again\u2014dangerous to elites, and dangerous to stability \u2026 It is perhaps up to the intellectual, if anyone, to face off against the pseudo-public culture of insipid media and dumbed-down \u2018big ideas,\u2019 and call that world what it is: stupid.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The English language has been in decline for a long time\u2014a very, very long time, in fact, and along the way <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2015\/02\/johnson-language-anxieties\" target=\"_blank\">plenty of people have seen fit to remind us<\/a> that we\u2019re swirling in the toilet bowl. \u201cIt was William Langland, author of <em>Piers Plowman<\/em>, who wrote that \u2018There is not a single modern schoolboy who can compose verses or write a decent letter.\u2019 He died in 1386.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere\u2019s something about making a diagram or calendar for an imagined world that feels over-the-top or maybe borderline delusional,\u201d but everyone does it anyway\u2014see this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2015\/02\/calendars-timelines-and-collages-mapping-the-imaginary.html\" target=\"_blank\">collection of novelists\u2019 visual aids<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Kingston Penitentiary, which had a rep as \u201cCanada\u2019s Alcatraz,\u201d opened in 1835 and closed only a few years ago.
