Stephen Marche has coined the term <em>centireading<\/em>, i.e., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/feb\/09\/centireading-force-reading-book-100-times-great-idea?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it\" target=\"_blank\">reading something a hundred\u00a0times<\/a>. He\u2019s accomplished only two feats of centireading (<em>Hamlet <\/em>and <em>The Inimitable Jeeves<\/em>), but they effectively restored the purity of his reading experience: \u201cThe main effect of reading <em>Hamlet<\/em> a 100 times was, counter-intuitively, that it lost its sense of clich\u00e9. \u2018To be or not to be\u2019 is the Stairway to Heaven of theatre; it settles over the crowd like a slightly funky blanket knitted by a favorite aunt. Eventually, if you read Hamlet often enough, every soliloquy takes on that same familiarity. And so \u2018To be or not to be\u2019 resumes its natural place in the play, as just another speech. Which renders its power and its beauty of a piece with the rest of the work.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>As a moneymaking device, the book is obsolete, as we all know. Of course it is\u2014it\u2019s very, very old. What you might not have heard yet is that Web sites are obsolete, too, and that your mere presence on this page renders you a technological dinosaur. It\u2019s okay. I\u2019m one, too. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theawl.com\/2015\/02\/the-next-internet-is-tv\" target=\"_blank\">This man is not<\/a>: \u201cIn his weird zone of the internet, he said, the concept of a large publication seemed utterly hopeless. The only thing that keeps people coming back to apps in great enough numbers over time to make real money is the presence of other people. So the only apps that people use in the way publications <em>want<\/em> their readers to behave\u2014with growing loyalty that can be turned into money\u2014are communications services. The near-future internet puts the publishing and communications industries in competition with each other for the same confused advertising dollars, and it\u2019s not even close.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>From the makers of the flaneur, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicbooks.org\/nonfiction\/mexico-city-chronicles\" target=\"_blank\">meet the <em>cr\u00f3nica<\/em><\/a>: \u201ca <em>cr\u00f3nica <\/em>is both \u2018a history that obeys the order of the times\u2019 and \u2018a journalistic piece \u2026 about current events.\u2019 But it is more. Starting in the nineteenth century, <em>cr\u00f3nica <\/em>and urban life became inseparable; to the mere recording of a city life for posterity, the genre added <em>fl\u00e2nerie <\/em>and modern investigative reporting. Together, <em>cr\u00f3nica <\/em>and<em> la ciudad<\/em> (the city) inform a typology of \u2018essaying\u2019 <em>a pie<\/em> (on foot), in which walking is to thinking what seeing is to reading, and cities\u2019 \u2018intensification of nervous stimulation\u2019 becomes social and cultural criticism.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In France, even illicit, politically scandalous affairs <a href=\"http:\/\/tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/06\/french-politics-scandal\/?ref=t-magazine&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">play out like fairy tales<\/a>: \u201cIt was not until his press attach\u00e9 phoned Val\u00e9rie and informed her that Fran\u00e7ois was \u2018madly in love with you\u2019 that Val\u00e9rie recognized the current of passion that roiled beneath their professional rapport \u2026 They were committed to others\u2014S\u00e9gol\u00e8ne and Denis\u2014and they had more than half a dozen children between them, but how could they refuse love\u2019s call? Over cr\u00eapes and waffles, Val\u00e9rie and Fran\u00e7ois confessed their feelings, which led to, she wrote, \u2018a kiss like no other kiss I\u2019d ever shared with anyone. A kiss that had been held back for nearly fifteen years, in the middle of a crossroads.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>William Greaves\u2019s <em>Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One <\/em>is one of the most daring movies of the sixties, which may be why no one saw it until 1991. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/richard-brody\/daring-original-overlooked-symbiopsychotaxiplasm-take-one\" target=\"_blank\">Now his film is finally getting its due<\/a>: \u201cGreaves was up there with John Cassavetes and Shirley Clarke in the blend of sophisticated modernism and emotional fury, of self-implication and formal innovation, of self-revelation and revelation of the heart of the times.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s one thing to be well read\u2014quite another to be well reread.
