This happened to Sumerian and Hebrew\u2014and it happened to Latin too. People all over the Mediterranean world and beyond continued to use Latin after Virgil and Cicero\u2014and they did so in endlessly creative ways.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The hazards of open endings: Why does so much literary fiction refuse to provide a real resolution? \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/booksblog\/2015\/feb\/06\/an-unexpected-ending-for-literary-progress?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it\" target=\"_blank\">An authorial strategy now so widespread to have almost become the norm<\/a> in literary fiction was so \u2018unfamiliar\u2019 back in 1925 that Woolf suggested readers \u2018need a very daring and alert sense of literature to make us hear the tune.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A 1765 book about ornithology <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abebooks.com\/rare-books\/most-expensive-sales\/ever.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">has sold for $190,000<\/a>: \u201cPublished in Florence in Italian in five volumes, it contains 600 beautiful hand-colored engraved plates of birds. Commissioned by Maria Luisa, the Grand Duchess of Tuscany, the book took ten years to complete \u2026 Some consider the book to be a commentary on 18th-century Italian high society because the bird poses are almost human.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2015\/02\/technicolor-at-100\/385039\/\" target=\"_blank\">Technicolor turns 100<\/a>: \u201cWe realize that color is violent and for that reason we restrained it,\u201d an early adopter once said. But today, Technicolor has developed \u201cthis very vibrant, saturated palette &#8230; When these films started getting more colorful, that&#8217;s what audiences reacted to. They loved this artificial, fantasy, over-the-top palette. And that\u2019s the way color shifted. It\u2019s idealized.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Running a bookstore is hard. Running an anarchist bookstore is even harder. And not because of the anarchy, it turns out\u2014because of the antianarchy. At San Francisco\u2019s Bound Together, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/hoodline.com\/2015\/02\/bound-together-a-look-inside-haight-street-s-anarchist-bookstore\" target=\"_blank\">there\u2019ve been plenty of adventures<\/a>, like the time when the bookstore was threatened by Neo-Nazis in the eighties and members slept in the space nightly to protect it.
