His course was called Fate and the Individual in European Literature,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ayjay.tumblr.com\/post\/32688676580\/w-h-auden-taught-at-the-university-of-michigan\" target=\"_blank\">and its syllabus mandated more than six thousand\u00a0pages of reading<\/a>: <em>The Divine Comedy<\/em>, <em>The Brothers Karamazov<\/em>, <em>Moby-Dick<\/em>, <em>Fear and Trembling\u00a0<\/em>\u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-jane-austen-family-letters-wicked-ned-huntington-collection-20150127-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Coming to the Huntington Library<\/a>: Jane Austen\u2019s family letters, Wicked Ned the Pirate\u2019s watercolors, Louis Pasteur\u2019s beer notes (\u201cscribbled on pages of various sizes, in black and blue ink\u201d).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/surreal-end-unforgettable-queen-pedro-lemebel-1952-2015\" target=\"_blank\">On Pedro Lemebel<\/a>, a Chilean writer (and artist and activist and provocateur) who died last week: \u201ca writer who called himself a \u2018queen\u2019 (<em>una loca<\/em>) and \u2018a poor old faggot\u2019 (<em>un marica pobre y viejo<\/em>), and whose style and obsessions were forged on the social margins and in political opposition.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2014\/jan\/10\/unseen-alfred-hitchcock-holocaust-documentary-screening\" target=\"_blank\">unreleased documentary about the Holocaust<\/a>, suppressed for decades, is being screened in full for the first time later this year. \u201cThe film, shown at test screenings, extremely disturbed colleagues, experts and film historians.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Fear death? Sure you do! Don\u2019t just sit there drumming your fingers and waiting for the end, though. Talk about it. Over coffee. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospectmagazine.co.uk\/features\/take-me-to-the-death-cafe\" target=\"_blank\">At a Swiss death caf\u00e9<\/a>. \u201cThe idea for the caf\u00e9 mortel was simple: the gathering was to take place in a restaurant, anyone could come, and [Bernard] Crettaz [a Swiss sociologist] himself would gently marshal the conversation. The only rule was that there was to be no prescription: no topic, no religion, no judgment.
