This arrangement required a special dispensation: Years earlier, when Cervantes was a soldier, his ship had been captured by pirates, and he was held captive for five years. The Trinitarias\u2019s religious order had helped arrange for his safe release, so he asked to be buried there. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The order obliged, but upon his death, there was a bit of a hiccup: apparently no one thought to mark his grave. If it was marked, it wasn\u2019t marked well\u2014centuries later, no one is really sure where exactly Cervantes was interred. As the<em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/11\/world\/europe\/a-not-so-quixotic-search-for-cervantes.html?_r=0\">reported last March<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Strangely, either through neglect or oversight, reverence for the dead or the seeming impossibility of unraveling a riddle obscured by the passage of time, no effort has been made over the years to locate Cervantes\u2019s grave site.<\/p>\n<p>Spain should have searched for Cervantes \u201ca long time ago,\u201d said Alfonso de Ceballos-Escalera, a publisher and historian who has researched the writer\u2019s family. \u201cI think that we\u2019ve done less than others to find some of our most famous people because this also corresponds to a Catholic view, which considers that what is important after a burial is the spirit and not the body and the physical remains.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Soon after that article was published, the search began in earnest, \u201cworking with ground-penetrating radar technology.\u201d And earlier today, the Associated Press reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/bigstory.ap.org\/article\/a13fc08ba71b44219b2642b22da01bc9\/spain-cervantes-searchers-find-casket-his-initials\">Cervantes\u2019s remains may have at last been found<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Experts searching for the remains of Miguel de Cervantes said Monday that they found wooden fragments of a casket bearing the initials \u201cM.C.\u201d with bones in and around them in a crypt underneath the chapel of a cloistered convent in Madrid.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Archeologists have yet to verify if the bones are Cervantes\u2019s\u2014they\u2019ll need to consult records of his battle wounds, as well as his portrait and his stories, \u201cin which he relates that shortly before dying he only had six teeth\u201d\u2014but it seems likely that their search is over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot write in Spanish without having Cervantes in mind,\u201d the translator Edith Grossman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/28\/why-we-read-don-quixote\/\">told the <em>Daily<\/em> in 2011<\/a>. \u201cThere is no question, in my mind, that you couldn\u2019t have M\u00e1rquez, for example, without him.
