It works by suggestion, but this doesn\u2019t mean that it cannot console, teach, amuse, enlighten, mimic, disconcert and so much more. It can capture\u2014or cause us to reconstruct\u2014experiences and feelings that we might otherwise not be conscious of \u2026 Poetry\u2019s use of language is at the furthest extreme from the self-help book, which is often dogmatic, insistent, reductive, bullying even.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>How to cheer yourself up when you\u2019re feeling misunderstood: read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/01\/23\/bad-reviews-classics_n_6527638.html?ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000031\" target=\"_blank\">scathing early reviews of canonical novels<\/a>, such as this one, by H. L. Mencken, for a certain 1925 classic: \u201cScott Fitzgerald\u2019s new novel, <em>The Great Gatsby<\/em><em>,<\/em> is in form no more than a glorified anecdote, and not too probable at that \u2026 This story is obviously unimportant \u2026 What ails it, fundamentally, is the plain fact that it is simply a story\u2014that Fitzgerald seems to be far more interested in maintaining its suspense than in getting under the skins of its people.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Yvette Marie Dostatni\u2019s new series of photographs documents <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/behold\/2015\/01\/21\/yvette_marie_dostatni_photographs_conventions_in_her_series_the_conventioneers.html\" target=\"_blank\">the rise of the convention in America<\/a>: the obsessive subcultures, the hotel conference rooms, the sprawling trade shows. \u201cThat&#8217;s just the culture of the United States: People are looking for places they can fit in for two to three days, a pass to get out of their daily lives. They\u2019re looking for people who are like them.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Is there any hope of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/01\/26\/cobweb\" target=\"_blank\">preserving or archiving the Internet<\/a>? \u201cThe Web dwells in a never-ending present. It is\u2014elementally\u2014ethereal, ephemeral, unstable, and unreliable \u2026 In providing evidence, legal scholars, lawyers, and judges often cite Web pages in their footnotes \u2026 but a 2013 survey of law- and policy-related publications found that, at the end of six years, nearly fifty per cent of the URLs cited in those publications no longer worked.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Among a certain kind of \u201ccreative\u201d Silicon Valley set, the word <em>maker<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2015\/01\/why-i-am-not-a-maker\/384767\/\" target=\"_blank\">has taken on a grating ubiquity<\/a>\u2014you\u2019re not truly innovating if you\u2019re not making something. Does this mean that, say, teaching is not a fundamentally creative pursuit? \u201cI am not a maker. In a framing and value system is about creating artifacts, specifically ones you can sell, I am a less valuable human. As an educator, the work I do is superficially the same, year on year \u2026 To characterize what I do as \u2018making\u2019 is to mistake the methods\u2014courses, workshops, editorials\u2014for the effects.
