The students were told to incorporate whatever information investigators recorded in finding and examining the skeleton, including estimates of the victim\u2019s age and height, maybe a hair type or style, and possible clothing sizes.\u201d (Listen to the sound of hundreds of television executives thinking, Could this be our next big crime series?)<\/li>\n<li>Leslie Jamison <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/books\/2015\/01\/specimen_days_by_walt_whitman_an_excerpt_from_leslie_jamison_s_introduction.html\" target=\"_blank\">on the enigma of natural beauty<\/a> in Whitman\u2019s <em>Specimen Days<\/em>: \u201cPart of our pleasure in reading his book \u2026 is not just feeling close to his sensory perceptions, but feeling invited more deeply into our own\u2014to feel the world more fully in all its snorting ice and malachite cabbages and whirling locusts and wriggling worms.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the thirties, a Grade A swinging-dick asshole named Harry Anslinger took over the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, then on the verge of being dissolved. So he set himself a reasonable goal: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2015\/01\/drug-war-the-hunting-of-billie-holiday-114298.html#ixzz3PP6xSkLj\" target=\"_blank\">lock away Billie Holiday for drug abuse<\/a>. Jazz to him sounded \u201clike the jungles in the dead of night.\u201d His agents wrote that \u201cmany among the jazzmen think they are playing magnificently when under the influence of marihuana but they are actually becoming hopelessly confused and playing horribly.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In sci-fi, where exactly do the science and fiction collide? \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/booksblog\/2015\/jan\/21\/real-science-science-fiction-sf-scholar?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it\" target=\"_blank\">Science writing isn\u2019t the same as fiction writing<\/a>. Sometimes people who read popular science about scientific theories like loop quantum gravity say \u2018it\u2019s like reading science fiction.\u2019 But no, it isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/2015\/01\/what-turner-drank-after-day-sketching-carnage\" target=\"_blank\">Painting and boozing in Belgium<\/a>: Two years after Waterloo, J. M. W. Turner \u201cvisited the Belgian battlefield where the Brits, Prussians, Dutch and Belgians finally put paid to Napoleon\u2019s dreams of empire.
