Their employees are already hard at work: \u201cEmily Brewster has produced anywhere from five to twenty-five definitions a week. <em>Twerking<\/em> is ready, she tells me in December. <em>Nutjob<\/em> (which dates to 1959) and <em>minorly<\/em> are good to go. <em>Jeggings<\/em> is, too. The new sense of <em>trolling <\/em>looks promising, she says, \u2018but first I have to finish <em>hot mess<\/em>.\u2019 Brewster is very excited about <em>hot mess<\/em>. Thanks to Google Books, she found it in a machinists union trade journal from 1899: \u2018If the newspaper says the sky is painted with green chalk that is what goes. Verily, I say unto you, the public is a hot mess.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 1969, the curator Henry Geldzahler convinced the Met to host \u201cNew York Painting and Sculpture: 1940\u20131970,\u201d a show so vast and intensely contemporary that it remains a watershed\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/13\/henrys-show-new-york-school-met-reprisal-paul-kasmin-gallery\/?smid=tw-tmagazine&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">so why not just do the whole thing again<\/a>? \u201cHenry had a fantastic eye. He wasn\u2019t wrong about anything. He was always right.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A mother from an affluent Texas town <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-ayn-rand-poverty-books-20150119-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">would strongly prefer her children to read Ayn Rand in school<\/a>, not <em>The Working Poor<\/em>, David K. Shipler\u2019s book about poverty. In other news, Oxfam announced yesterday that 1 percent of the global population holds half the world\u2019s wealth.<\/li>\n<li>George Steinmetz traveled by helicopter to take <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/photo-booth\/new-york-winter?mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">these aerial photographs of New York in winter<\/a>. He and his pilot \u201cfrequently flew so low that they passed in between buildings, with Steinmetz and his camera hanging out of the open door.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/alice-k-turner-fiction-editor-at-playboy-magazine-for-two-decades-dies\/2015\/01\/19\/f164398a-9ff6-11e4-9f89-561284a573f8_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Remembering Alice K. Turner<\/a>, who was <em>Playboy<\/em>\u2019s fiction editor for two decades. \u201cFiction is kind of a nuisance,\u201d she once said. \u201cThe ad sales guys don\u2019t see the point. They would cut it out if they could, except for the fact that it adds a certain respectability \u2026 <em>Playboy<\/em> stories have beginnings, middles, and ends. They have a kind of general appeal. They are not experimental.
