Although Rachel Cusk\u2019s Outline<\/a><\/em> has not been available in hardcover until today, it\u2019s already enjoyed a wild succ\u00e8s d\u2019estime with some of our favorite critics. Last Wednesday, in the New York\u00a0Times<\/em>, Dwight Garner called it \u201ctransfixing \u2026 You find yourself pulling the novel closer to your face<\/a>, as if it were a thriller and the hero were dangling over a snake pit.\u201d In The New Yorker<\/em>, Elaine Blair used Outline<\/em> as the occasion for a trenchant essay on fiction and autobiography<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The novel is mesmerizing; it marks a sharp break from the conventional style of Cusk\u2019s previous work \u2026 Cusk\u2019s insight in Outline<\/em> is that, instead of trying to show two sides of a marriage, she might do the opposite: focus on the inevitable, treacherous one-sidedness of any single account [which] surely has something to do with why marriages themselves come apart.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In the Guardian<\/em>, Hilary Mantel described Outline<\/em> as \u201cfascinating, both on the surface and in its depths<\/a>.\u201d Bookforum<\/a><\/em>\u2019s Hannah Tennant-Moore called it \u201clovely \u2026 smart, ascetic\u201d; and in the most recent New York\u00a0Times Book Review<\/em> Heidi Julavits raved: \u201cSpend much time with this novel<\/a> and you\u2019ll become convinced [Cusk] is one of the smartest writers alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

None of this will come as news to readers of The Paris Review<\/em><\/a>\u2014because, starting\u00a0with our Winter 2013 issue<\/a>,\u00a0we published Outline<\/em> in its entirety, with exclusive illustrations by Samantha Hahn.
